Seeing the ending scenes hit weird on the first pass.
The first watch all I could focus on after the fight with Sephiroth was how they where using the ending CGI from FF7 and wondering if they'd get DMCA'd for it.
Yeah, they have voices and changed the sound effects and music, but they literally used most of the CGI from the end of FF7 for about 3 minutes. I then got a good lol when they drew in Vincent and Yuffie.
My point is I was not focused for the very end of the series because I was distracted by bullshit my brain brought into the equation without my desire. I doubt SE will take this down over copyright, not after the other parts of the series have been up for years. Part of it was probably the use of dialogue from the original alongside seeing the use of the visuals. It was feeling like they just retold beat for beat the ending of FF7.
Basically everything after Sephiroth I couldn't focus on until the credits music, which was fanfuckingtastic, kicked in. And then one final, future AVALANCE TIME MOTHER F*CKERS!!! got me and I just went to bed.
Second pass:
The final HD remake joke was great. Smiled both times.
They did not just retell the ending of FF7 1:1. The voice acting seems like it's something SE should have gone back and added ages ago in FF rereleases, given how much extra it adds to scenes even when the visuals are early PS1 level.
TFS added dialogue to be sure, but they sold the lines the original delivered as text. The crews been getting better over the course of the series, everyone here is in their best form. I think it's what was messing with my brain yesterday, it's good and it tracks close to how the original ended in many ways.
Red/Zach sections where damn good. Bugenhagen and Reds goodbye had me choking up. And they fully fleshed out Yuffie and Vincent more than the game ever did.
I've saw comments today from people saying they never knew the Zach or Red scenes were even there. I'm happy FF7A is someone's introduction to either scene.
The Bahamut scene was solid, and the ulitma weapon bit was so good. I wish they'd done just a little more with how they got KoTR but they did enough. That along with Emerald getting a name drop and Ruby getting a short cameo with a continuity error** make me think that some bits got more polish than others, and some stuff got dropped for pacing or lack of zing on the delivery.
**Cloud is looking for the ultimate WEAPON Ultimate Weapon so that he can get his ultimate weapon Ultima weapon. He has the Ultima weapon in the Ruby scene before he gets it in the next scene.
