Smart TV = 3rd Monitor???

Is there any chance anyone here knows if it's possible (and if so how) to get my computer to recognize my smart TV as an additional monitor?

What GPU are you using? nVidia can't output to more than two displays unless you are using dual GPU card like 590GTX and AMD require you to use DisplayPort for 3rd and above.

If you have an AMD card then you can buy an Active DP->HDMI adapter, if using nVidia I think you are out of luck.

Well I do have a nVidia card (although I will be replacing my computer in a few months so I'll keep this in mind) but it has three places to plug in monitors on the back so I'd imagine that it would support three.

I suppose I don't want that to be the question, so much as whether or not this is actually (and wirelessly) possible- especially with a new computer coming into play so soon. ^_^

I'm confused as to what the question is. Do you already have that device or something similar? Is it supposed to act like a monitor or does it use separate software that you have to install? Your current GPU shouldn't matter at all as the device should be acting independent of the rest of the hardware.

I have a computer, and two monitors. I also have a smart tv (hanging on the wall to the left of me). Because I'm doing some programming from home today, I was thinking that it would be nice if I could run FFXI on another screen to do some fairly mindless tasks (magic skillups, combat skill ups on fortalices, etc); this led to the thought "I wonder if I could use my smart TV?"

So it occurred to me that it might be possible to
a. have some sort of wireless adapter that would plug into the "pc" connector on the back, and then I could connect something to the third monitor slot on my computer
b. or to somehow get my computer to utilize it through the network since it's all connected

nvidia cards by default only support 2 monitors, even though the connections on the back might say otherwise (mine has 4). get yourself a cheapie second video card and it can output there np

you can get USB video cards but its not as good a video and usually wont output in HD, there are wireless video card connectors but they work like shit, and you cant get it to run through the network unless you get a mini PC to put on the TV.

I am currently using this card on mine, its simple and doesnt use a lot of power and makes no sound, its PCIx 1x too so it can go about anywhere

if you want something a little better however, something in this range http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...00_i01_details will output in HD though I did not like the gf210 but that was because the fan on it was louder than the fans and my GTX560ti in my silent case, so I removed it post haste (I dislike loud computers)

any modern chipset (the 2x0 to 5x10 range) will properly output in HD to allow you to play even bluray movies and give you good video quality and possibly even transfer the sound as well (if its done via HDMI) just make sure you leave enough breathing room for your main video card and dont try to play games on the wrong video card. remember that everything connected to the main video card gets that cards power and even though the screen is connected to the third card, the video output will not be the same level of power if you try to play games (learned this on FFXI when quad boxing)
