Probably because your average urban guy doesn't know to call the police and instead calls 911? You're forgetting this kid was a teenager, an MMA student, and played football. I'm pretty sure he felt like he was going to defend himself instead of do the sensible thing. He was also on the phone with Jeantel at the time.
