Here is where things get muddled. Because people have to remember that Zimmerman considered himself the neighborhood watch. Which is something anyone can appoint themselves to. I would say following someone you suspect is something a person from a watch would do.

While I agree 100% with this, it's still within his legal rights to walk on public property following someone with a weapon and not expect to be physically assaulted. The gun gave him the courage to get out of his car, which is unfortunate, but Martin sealed his fate by acting like a thug.

Personally I'd be extremely happy if open/concealed carry were overturned tomorrow and anyone who isn't a police officer leaving their house with a gun and shooting/killing someone could be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. We live in Murica though.

I followed a suspicious character who was standing by my truck one night at midnight. I went outside armed with a pistol and discovered he had been cutting the lock to some tools in my truck. Called the police and reported his movements until they stopped him. I didnt make contact with this man, i allowed the police to do so i just reported his movements.

And even in that instance (my parents are, how about that), they're directed to call the police, and if you're to follow, keep distance. He clearly didn't do that, or he wouldn't have caught an ass whoopin.

This isn't correct, either. If it were, you would never see Neighborhood Watch signs. They're not just put up by people who want to start one. That's why Zimmerman's actions were not legitimate. He did not abide by his community's recommendations, nor by those of law enforcement, who actively work with legitimate Neighborhood Watch groups.

Neighborhood watches are not vigilante organizations. When suspecting criminal activities, members are encouraged to contact authorities and not to intervene.

Legitmate ones are backed by the National Sheriff's Association. Some towns, if small enough, act as an auxillary force to the police and are given flashlights, and in some places weapons, to actively patrol. They're given radios to contact police and maintain comms if something is seen while on patrol. All of this stuff is issued out by the local police force. Even then, there are watch rotations, and at the end of your shift, you turn your stuff in and go the fuck home. They're also strongly encouraged to NOT carry their own weapons, particularly when not on patrol, to prevent some Zimmerman shit from going down.

Some of you were probably part of a watch group and didn't fully realize it. Remember Crimestoppers from school? What do you think that shit is? Organized and led by the police liaison to the school to keep an eye on suspicious activity in the area? And if you see something, report, but stay out of contact of the situation? Taught this shit when i was like 11.
