I was in 6th grade being bussed to a middle school in the projects in Tampa. I remember when the Rodney King riots were going down all the black people that lived in the surrounding neighborhood pulled their kids from school and surrounded the fences around our school wearing Malcom X shirts and waving black power flags. They started throwing glass bottles and rocks over the fence at all the other non-white kids at school that day. They had to call in riot cops and bussed us home at lunch, cancelled school for a couple of days, it was pretty awesome.
