An impact safety is one that's designed to stop simple impact from firing the gun.

In this particular case it blocks the hammer until the actual trigger is pulled, so that it doesn't hit the primer just by, say, being dropped. It's properly called a hammer block, but I don't expect people to have any idea wtf that is if they don't know shit about guns.

Stop pulling random things out off your brain and pretending they exist. By googling the "model of gun Zimmerman was carrying", I find the term "impact safety" in a one year old Time article.

Otherwise the term doesn't seem to exist period on the internet outside of Plow's brain.

That's because people generally call it a "drop safety," which I find to be only partially accurate.

The patent for the type of firing pin/hammer safety used in most modern guns, generally referred to as a "drop safety":

    http://www.google.com/patents/US4011678

The firing pin, however, does not move forward to fire the cartridge because the component of force in the direction of the arrow C also simultaneously moves the "impact" safety bolt 19 into a blocking position in which it engages a recess formed on the lower side of the firing pin. The second safety bolt 19 therefore prevents a movement of the firing pin and an accidental discharge of the pistol due to the impact.

In addition to the action of the "impact" safety bolt 19, it is desirable to structure the slide, firing pin, and hammer so that the backward movement of the slide following an impact causes the front face 23 of the hammer to strike the edge 24 of the slide and not the rear end 25 of the firing pin.

Sorry I don't have your precise Google powers, since "impact safety", "impact safety gun", and "impact safety firearm" don't show your source.

Yes, it's passed by other stuff if you use the wrong search terms. Hence my giving you the exact search term you need.

I'm pretty sure if you google blowing cocks you're not going to get pictures of chickens on a windy day, that does not mean they don't exist.

p.s. not being able to use google well is not a strong argument in favor of how much smarter you think you are than me

Correct me if i am wrong, but reading through that link, and looking at the diagrams provided... you are just describing the internal safety mechanism employed in firearms that prevents accidental discharge upon impact?

I am slightly confused because this seems to have nothing to do with an external safety still, so what is the relevance that the firearm in question had common internal hardware compared to other similar weapons?

It has nothing to do with the actual topic, it was a tangent Plow went off on a few pages ago that ended up confusing people who actually understand guns, and in the case of "impact safety" he went with a term that basically no one uses (since no one but him knew what he was talking about) because the universally accepted "drop safety" doesn't suit him.

Can we stop making every fucking thread in this subforum about Gun loadout/mechanics? It's getting fkin old. Stay on topic. Zimmerman didn't Accidentally drop the gun in his hands and shoot Martin in the chest. He pulled the trigger with the intent to shoot a bullet, end of story.

Because the crazy of the gun nuts cannot allow for the possibility that they'd ever do anything wrong. You've seen it repeatedly through this thread; "Shit will never happen to me," "If you're experienced it's ok to start dropping parts of gun safety," etc. Literally the kind of shit that the reasonable gun lovers will tell you over and over again is absolutely the worst kind of approach you can take to owning/handling a gun.

And then, of course, since Plow was involved, random plow-hater #4692 has to shit up the thread by claiming using the proper term instead of the gun-nut colloquialism (which is intended to imply there's only 1 way for a gun to accidentally go off) makes me bad.

This isn't about gun control laws. He legally owned a firearm with a concealed carry permit. He used in a situation where he thought he was in danger of bodily harm. End of story.

He didn't shoot up a school. He didn't shoot up a movie theater, so get that shit out of here. If you want to bring this up about gun control, go make a thread about the hundreds that die in the major cities due to gang related gun violence.

Prosecution closing statements were yesterday, defense started an hour ago and "reserved" 3 hours for it which means they probably only have plans for about 2.

After that is rebuttals and jury direction; in theory they could easily be going into deliberation by lunch. Most likely people will still be bullshitting for most of today and we'll probably get a verdict Monday or Tuesday. It's possible it'll be today, though.

    Simply: no.

If we're going to give people permission to carry guns around at will, and people are going to die as a result, then a place where someone died as a result of giving people permission to carry guns around at will is absolutely the place to be discussing that.

Not that we were, anyway, though; this particular conversation was about the implications and changes in behavior as a result of him carrying a gun and having it set up to be used absolutely as fast as possible, safety be damned.

I'd also like to point out something that happened a bit ago in the defense's closing statement:

He pointed out that every time there had been someone arrested or convicted of burglary etc. in that area recently it had been a young black male.

Yes, that's right, he absolutely tried to justify racial profiling, based on arrests/convictions, to defend Zimmerman.

I'm not actually sure whether or not they were cleared to point out that every time Zimmerman called it was about a black guy, but I'm sure they've at least pointed it out on an individual basis for the jurors to figure out; and if they put 2 and 2 together with the calls and the arrests... lol

aaaaaaand he definitely just made the argument that anyone in decent shape can run a mile in 4 minutes

    edit: ^

said 4 minute mile is now the basis of his argument for "what we know if you throw out zimmerman's testimony because he's a liar"

If purple skinned monkeys kept stealing shit from your neighborhood why would look for and/or report neon yellow kangaroos looking suspicious? Just to be PC?
