Damn near everyone here will have a unique horror story, whether it's their own or from someone they know.
Quite frankly, I just wanted to play video games instead of reading a book as kid. That's probably the main reason I didn't give a shit about religion. That's right, books. Maybe Christians should get with the times and make a video game. Wasn't there a Simpsons episode about that?

I live in Italy and I can't think of a single person who I know who isn't Catoholic, yet not once in my life have I personally experienced or seen any of the extremist episodes I often read on the General discussion board.
Religion here is meant as something to give you comfort in hard times and as an excuse to go visit relatives during holidays, that's it. Nobody is going to point you a gun if you break the rules and they're definitely not the first thing we think of whenever a life-changing decision is up.

Of course I'm not oblivious to things like pedophile priests and murders because "they were possessed by Satan", but based on my own experience I believe that Christianity itself isn't the problem, it's the people. No sane person would ever commit such crimes in the name of religion, because if it didn't exist they'd find some other excuse in its place.
This was definitely not what I observed when I lived in Italy.

Obviously it's not a big deal if every single person you know is catholic.

Guess i'm lucky then. Worst i've ever had was middle school arguments that were never much different than what you see here. It's interesting actually. The town i live in is like 99% white, and mostly christian, and yet in school there were absolutely never any problems related to religion, race, sexuality, etc. Half of the 20 black kids(out ~1300 people total) in my high school were some of the most liked kids in the school. We also had two openly gay kids who were both fairly well liked.

I went to Catholic school from K - 2nd and Catholic Church until around 13 or 14. Even as a small child it was never really about anything other than I didn't really get nor feel the message and I never really believed in any of it. Same thing happened for a while when I tried going to youth group with friends. Ended up with very little belief and I tried to force myself to accept God. Even when I tried to explain to other my "faith" I had doubt in myself when I was explaining WHY I believed in God. Then at some point I just realized that the belief in God was not for me. Too much crap had happened around me for me to believe that any good would come from following the kind of God that would have created this world and lead it the way it's been led.

I knew plenty of Atheists in my day who actually weren't on the internet. Thing is most atheists on the internet are far more vocal than they should be.

I'm a Christian, but don't ask me anything about the Bible or try to reference anything about it; I'll most likely stop listening. I was constantly forced to go to church every Sunday before I became a Junior in high school and even then I'm occasionally obligated to go because my dad was upgraded to Pastor while my mom turned into an Evangelist. Perhaps people would be more accepting to be Christian if they didn't shove it down their throats.

Also doesn't help that most Christians are stupid and can't think for themselves.

I specifically remember playing a Christian version of Doom in Sunday school when I was a kid, that consisted of throwing crosses at the bad guys while rescuing animals to put on Noah's Ark. It was actually kind of fun.

Don't forget bully victims. The vast majority of the posters here got their asses handed to them in sk00l. Just look at any random "bully victim fights back and stabs blah blah," it looks like every fucking poster is a blood-thirsty maniac.

I think the only thing more hilarious than the beliefs about the supernatural the religious have is their theories for why other people don't have them.

Because it couldn't possibly have anything to do with there being no evidence, nono. Need to get some psychobabble up ins.

I'm bloodthirsty because someone gets what's coming to them after they make a calculated decision to fuck with someone on a daily basis? Pour me a cup of O+ my good man.

You are the worst. My entire family (except for my immediate family) is extremely religious and attend church all the time, the ironic thing, they have the most problems and it's just God testing them. I find that... odd. Too many inconsistencies through out the bible and just organized religion to keep blindly accepting it. At least on my end.

Pray tell why these folk shouldn't be so vocal.

I see it as more of a "some people need it, some people don't" scenario. For some it offers a form of comfort and I get that. I don't hate on that. I just don't require it myself & I am not interested.

super 3d noah's ark, iirc it was one of the very few (possibly the only?) unlicensed commercially-released SNES games.

This is a fairly common interpretation. I argue that if someone was never introduced to the idea of god, they would never "need" it. It's completely superfluous in today's world, etc. I've argued it so many times on BG I really can't be arsed to drag it all out again. ;(
