Kinda late and it'll probably derail the discussion, but can someone explain to me what the difference is between the Old and New Testament? Which is the book that's most often referred to the 'Bible', and do people follow the teachings written in the other book, too?
I'm also confused as to why there's like a bazillion different churches with different names, even though they're supposedly churches for the same religion. I mean, I understand there's different sects to a religion, but I just find Christianity to have so many of them. Why is this?
My understanding is that the OT is just the Torah. The NT is that new-age Jesus philosophy shit. OT was full of god killing shit tons of people because he got butthurt a LOT. Jesus was supposed to make it so that god didn't have to do all that shit anymore, because Jesus died "for our sins."
My theory is that the OT cutthroat thug life shit wasn't too appealing to the masses, so they tried to make it a "kinder, gentler" religion by including all that squishy Jesus forgiveness shit.
edit: Hubby tells me the torah is actually just the first 5 books of the OT.
OT and NT together are considered the Holy Bible.
The Bible contains both the Old and New testaments. The Old testament predates Jesus and deals with Moses, Noah, the Egyptians, Genesis, Adam/Eve, Abraham, and all that jazz. God as presented in the Old testament is a very angry, bloodthirsty, vengeful sort. New testament is post-Jesus, where god becomes all nice and stuff. Teachings are taken from both books, though modern churches primarily use the New testament because it's a bit more synergistic with modern thought. The Old Testament is where you tend to get quotes about slavery, stoning whores, and God commanding people to slaughter others.
They want to be the very best, like no one ever was. To interpret biblez is their real test, to train men is their cause. Protestant! It's you and me. To rule is their destiny. You teach me and I'll teach them, Protestant!
Churches are political organizations. Their names and their messages change depending on what behaviors they want to elicit from their followers. They all co-opt the same base spirituality because it increases their precipitation among the masses. The ideological differences stem from their goals and the methods they use to achieve them.
Edit:
This is part of it, though there's also the matter of genealogy. The sons of Abraham and Isaac were God's chosen people. If you weren't born a member of the Jewish race, you were shit outta luck and ain't never getting into heaven. Church leaders decided that limiting their numbers to people born into the religion was detrimental to its growth, and so the idea was born that anyone of any race or previous creed could join the Kingdom of Heaven if they accepted Jesus. This allowed for a much broader base of followers, and brought in tremendous income for the Church [People used to have to pay for these sorts of things].
It's usually a look of shock when you say you aren't religious, a look of terror if you use the word atheist/agnostic followed by an attempt to convert or scorn poured with a condescending "I'll pray for you" or "Jesus loves you" after the fact.
Concepts like deism? I cant remember EVER hearing someone identify as a deist but I chalk that up to the intense social pressure in the US to conform to the monotheisms.
I was bullied into religion so I stab vaginas with my heterocock.
OT + NT = Holy Bible
OT = Messianic salvation via Covenant. You are part of God's Chosen and you must obey The Laws. Here are The Laws and look at what happens to people who don't obey (not good things). If you obey, you will be rewarded. Just wait for the Messiah.
NT = Oh hey it's Jesus, the Messiah. Salvation through sacrifice to God and following the Messiah's path through life. Get to hang out with Jesus and God in the afterlife if you obey these rules. Hooray for the Messiah.
Jimmy hats for Jesus!
On the topic of religious video games, I still own this gem:

If Atheists IRL were as vocal as Atheists on the internet, that would make their lives worse. Remember when I said most Christians are stupid and can't think for themselves? Behind a computer screen they don't need to worry about that, but the sky is the limit as to what happens if Christians knew their faces.
What, who said anything about the bible, religion, or other organized groups? People tend to blame x group based on what the minority does. Sorta like guilty by association, another fallacy. Look people are just fucking assholes and that is it, take a look at demostablah here. The point is I don't give a fuck what people do in the privacy of their own homes, that's between them and their maker. I don't care if you like to suck cock at night or eat pussy; pray to Zeus or some other deity in the sky, or hell. As long as it doesn't affect me, others, and to some extent the individual, by all means live and let die.

Do you have proof of your claim? Back in the days you actually had to do something, get caught in order to be x. Nowadays everybody gets pissed at what others say and makes them homophobes, xenophobes, anti-something, ad infinitum. Times are bad, we have too many pussies and I don't mean the good kind.
