I love you so damn much.

That's the attitude that aggravates me from christians. Fundies that yell "god hates fags" and the like are just lulzy, it's the so-called "moderate" christians and their patronising BS that are annoying.
A christian apparently can't fathom that apostasy can arise from sincere convinction (or lack thereof), it has to be some traumatic events that made you "lose your faith".

Not really. It's more a matter of patching up different religions into one.
The OT is a rip-off of the Torah. The NT is a rip-off of a myriad of religions: jesus is almost entirely plagiarised from Mithras, some elements come from egyptian mythology,... and then there are the patching sections and derivative works. The saul/paul character and his letters, for instance, is purely derivative.

It's rarely explained just how much of a frankenstein work the christian bible is; and that's where all the inconsistencies arise from.
It's like a book where pages 1-3 are written by Stephen King, 4-8 by JK Rowling, 9-18 disjointed paragraphs from unfinished Edgar Allan Poe novellae, 19-60 is a misplaced laundry list, 61-75 a "broken hearts" column and so on... call that book "holy" and milleniae of confusion, ignorantism and bloodshed will pretty much inevitably ensue.

I had kind of a wierd experience at work today... my manager "came out of the closet" to me about his Catholicism and how important it is to him. This guy is like the nicest guy, I've been working for him for ~8 months, and it took him that long to tell me he's Catholic because at his last job his faith was severely criticized by his Athiest & Agnostic co-workers.

I was just blown away by how sad and humbled it made him to even speak about it. Typically I've always felt that the religious groups were always the persecutors depending on which one was dominant in a particular cultural setting, but fuck me if that didn't take the cake. It's really the only reason I clicked on this thread, tbh. If there is a distinction between religious persecution and the attitudes of the Athiests towards religious people that I've met and that post in these religious threads, I fail to see it. Who gives a fuck what another person believes? I honestly think that if you have ever criticized somebody for their belief system, whichever it may be, you should be ashamed.

Well... you know. Except if it was a scientologist you were making fun of. That stuff is just bat-shit crazy.

lol, I know this is a joke and all, but its no less crazy than any other religion honestly. Not to say I think people should go around making people feel like shit for what they believe of course.

Yeah let's cut back on the vitriol at least a little bit.

In other news: I'm here to contest that abrahamic religions are much crazier and more sinister than scientology.

You know what I wonder about sometimes? How is it exactly that Athiests reason away the existence of religion as a whole? Darwinism and the scientific concepts surrounding natural selection as the dominant force in our world don't allow for unnecessary or stupid things. Smart survives, stupid dies. It's a very simple set of rules. In a purely logical sense, Athiesm assumes that religious gods are a stupid concept because it assumes they don't exist. However, they persist in our culture and every other culture in the world. The concepts of natural selection therefore demand that they have value to survival, and therefore value to us as a species. Is it the community in general that gives religion it's staying power? If so, how has it not died out entirely over the past two thousand years? Religious community runs counter to any concept of innate gene pool diversification, as people of similar religions tend to choose like-minded mates, and shun those different from them...

See where I'm going with this? The very existence of religion runs counter to every reasonable Atheist concept. Is that why you guys hate it so much? Or is it just human nature to criticize things that are different from ourselves, and you're just walking down the ignorant road that so many have tread before you?

    Not sure if serious.

Religion is not genetic. I know, i know, an easy way to predict someone's religion is by their parents. But believe it or not, it in fact is not genetic. What is genetic (at least to some extent) is the tendency to believe any bullshit you're told. Naturally, this would be extremely useful to survival, if you go back a to the distant past. Not only have there been countless situations where not accepting a religion has meant death, but it's also obviously beneficial for many, many reasons to just go along with whatever the fuck society says.

Being religious (at least up until the last hundred or two years) was hugely beneficial, without a doubt. However, you'd be an idiot to think that is because there is any sense in their bullshit.

I think it's a reasonable question. You can troll me all day long if you want, but if you haven't ever thought about why religion exists and you're an atheist, I'd have to imagine you're taking the easy way out and just saying "Fuck it he looks like Zeus obviously it's not real"... which is fine. I guess I'd expect more out of a group that prides themselves on thinking about things and refusing the spoon-fed bullshit, but whatevs

Serious question: did you pass sophomore biology in high school? Literally every single person older than 15 should know how retarded your question and logic are here.

You're jumping on Tagus' throat way too fast. Instead of hitting reply right away, try to spend 5 minutes trying to understand what he meant instead of throwing a fit or argue about genetics.

Tagus isn't talking about "evolution" in the traditional sense of the term. What he is trying to say is that our society also "evolve" in a way that is beneficial to our race. Basically, if religion survived for as long as it did, and is as present in every corner of the world, maybe it's because it's beneficial, in a strict practical term, to human.

The principle of least action guide evolution and pretty much everything in this world that is subject to statistics. Religion might be the most efficient way to make our society happy and productive, and making an argument against that is difficult considering we have very few examples of the opposite in our history.

While you can disagree with such theory, you can simply reject it on the basis that "it is stupid". That is in itself pretty stupid.

Much like your astonishingly unlettered analysis of natural selection, the question can only be answered if you bother to find out on your own time. These aren't questions that can be answered in a forum post in any coherent manner. You are literally describing entire fields of psychology, anthropology, and sociology. Go to the library and learn something.

But I'll give you the skeleton of an answer anyway.

    - Religion is our first attempt at rationalization, philosophy, science, etc.
    - Group instincts, ingroup cohesion, groupthink, etc, are native to humans as a social species that has survived due to our cohesion and organization. Inclusion is a driving force behind human behavior.
    - Religion is the simplest and oldest control structure that we have, and is a remarkably primitive one.
    - Look at the massive parallels between religious dogma and organization and the functioning of tyrannical states, dictatorships, and the master/slave relationship. They are virtually identical.
    - Ergo, religion is inherently anti-freedom and destructively conformist. It is no longer necessary in today's world, and should be undesirable to any educated person.
