The only thing I really have against DC is I hate driving there. Are you from NOVA? Do you have that NOVA attitude against everyone else in VA? Just curious, it definitely exists but I don't want to make an assumption.

Roanoke is a pretty weird town with a mixed up personality. We have a very high refugee population, and also we have a large gay community built off of people who have left their smaller southwestern VA towns to move somewhere more comfortable. There is a solid minority representation in things like city council and local school board.

I like living here. This guy sucks and so does our current governor, but this is home to me and you don't just pack up and leave over politics that will change over time. For all who assume that rural equals automatic evangelical christian republicans, that isn't what you will find in my part of VA. Here the more common thread is methodist democrats who grew up believing that the democratic party was the party for the common man.

Look up Douglas Wilder, the first black VA governor who served in that role from 1990 to 1994.

Grew up in Fairfax Co. and went to college at Mary Washington in Fredericksburg. Met people from all over the state and there were a few... oddballs. A lot of kids on the baseball team were from Louisa Co. and needless to say I had never seen anyone drinking pickle juice out of a mason jar before. But most were very cool, also visited VaTech a bunch and that was more diverse than my school.

Douglas Wilder was a boss. VA has a history of some very centrist politicians (I really like Mark Warner, and from what I remember Chuck Robb and John Warner).
