Every state has shitty things about them going on, it's just odd you moved and are still trying to make VA to be one of the most racists states possible or something. It's really weird behavior. I moved out of the state but still have great love for Roanoke and the area I came from, shits beautiful and clean. I've been all over the country, SWVA is still one of my favorite places ever.

Not to mention the subtle racism of you basically saying minorities in MD/VA are too stupid to realize they are being subjected to secret inherent southern racism.

Don't generalize. I've lived in MD all my life and while some have some racist tendencies (usually in the sticks) or outright paranoia (mostly young mothers that were rich and sheltered as youths), I've met far more people that don't have a racist bone in their bodies. Not hating. I love VA -- it's my home -- but I'm sad at the direction it is going. I said it isn't even CLOSE to as bad as it's more southern counterparts and comparing the two brands was a laughable action. But I grew up there thinking that VA was completely fine and even used to laugh at people calling it "southern" -- because to me at that time it seemed as accepting and open a place as any I'd been. I never witnessed what I perceived to be blatant racism -- but looking back I realize that it was because I didn't know what I was looking for. I never noticed it until I moved to SWVA actually. Living in Wytheville for a year opened my eyes. The black kids in my school were treated in a manner that I found really shocking and also very embarrassing. Teachers would make sideways comments to them and students would parrot their parents' racist jokes and views. When I moved back to Richmond I began to look closer at it and saw that even there it was present -- perhaps not as blatant but present for sure -- which was shocking to me because again I'd never noticed it. I'd ask my black friends if they saw it or recognized it and many of them said "yeah, but that's the way people around here are, so I just don't pay it any mind now."

Not hating on VA but many Virginians like to sit there and think that VA is some sort of haven in the south compared to the rest of it. My point is that we're no South Carolina, but we're not saints either. People aren't going to call you a coon to your face, but you'll see more subtle slights -- many of them won't even be on purpose, that'll just be the way they were raised and they just don't realize what they're saying or doing. It'd be more out of habit and mannerism than actual hate.

At my old job a new employee was skeptical of one of our nurses because of how he looked: cornrows, tattoos, a gold tooth. He "looked" pretty thuggish. "That guy is a nurse?" the new person asked me... My response was that actually, he was one of our best ones -- and he was. Easily one of the most caring, thorough, intelligent and hard-working people we had. I could see the shock on her face. People probably would have judged him based on how he looked... and they'd have really lost out. He was a fucking fantastic co-worker and a great friend.

Wanna take a guess at how many old ladies in the Fan District my husband and I would get scowls or shocked stares from when we walked by holding hands? Or how many seemed embarrassed when I introduced a black man as my husband? I didn't see VA in that way before -- I'm just saying the state isn't full of saints like I once thought, just because we're not "far south." Again, it's subtle. No one called him a coon, but people still treated him and us differently.

Also just lol if you haven't seen black people get yelled at by groups of people crowded around statues on Monument Avenue holding Confederate flags! Happens a lot. They've been having those rallies more and more lately.

Not too stupid, no. Most of the friends I've spoken to about it say that they're just so used to it they don't really pay any mind to it now. Perhaps that'd be better described as "pretending not to notice." One guy told me he just realized it wasn't meant "that way" and that he regards it as a mannerism from how someone was raised. I guess subtle is just the shortest way for me to describe what he said.

Pretty much every southern state will tell you VA isn't the south -- except VA.

If you want to harp on the generalization, ok -- this is what I have observed myself. I am sure there are people who are not. I know a lot of people who are not-- but they are all people MY AGE -- and I've even met some my age who still do and say some pretty off-color things that they don't see the harm in, because they were just raised in that way.

I lived in Wytheville from like, age 3 or so to 8. That place I will agree with you IS a cesspool. There are other such cesspools in VA and other states as well.

Ironically, my grandfather who I mentioned before lives in Wytheville. When my uncle played football in high school, my grandfather would go and pick him up. He regularly loaded his truck up with all the poor players, black or white, and took them all home. According to what I have been told, more than once when it was raining, he crowded as many as he could into the cab of the truck and took them home in as many trips as he had to take. My grandmother didn't like this because she worried what people might think.

I'm probably rare in that I grew up in a family culture that taught me from the very beginning that racism is a backwards and ignorant world view. My grandmother is the only person I know of in the past two generations of my family who held any racist views, and they weren't as much real racist opinions but rather social paranoia of standing out.

I feel like that's what I encounter from old white ladies who see me with my husband. Their faces go "oh dear, does she not know what people are thinking of her being married to that black man?" -- It seems like a sort of pity... a very misplaced sense of genuine concern.

Also, to touch on what someone else said, NY was probably the most racist northern state in the country during the slavery and segregationist stages. The amount of race riots were pretty crazy.
