I used Delta and AA. Continental charges you the price of an actual SEAT (like "people" prices -- for my flight that was $600!) Delta and AA let you carry them on as luggage for $75-100. You REALLY don't need to tranq em with xanax etc. Rescue Remedy and a Thundershirt will go a LONG way -- and if you need an extra push, some infant benedryl will do wonders. You don't need to knock em out, just relax em.

Remember, don't use Orbitz/etc for purchasing the tickets, because the airline is the one that determines if it is a flight in which enough "pet spots" (which are in *very* limited supply on each flight, and by that I mean 2-3 spots per PLANE load) are open for both of your pets. Each passenger can carry one pet. The guideline is that the carrier has to fit underneath the seat (my cat's did, see the post for the kind of bag I used) but they don't make you actually PUT them there. Heck, I had my cat out of the carrier and in my lap for part of the flight -- she was REALLY tame though, like I said she was very old (17 at the time.) Basically it's like paying for an extra carryon bag -- but in a circumstance where only a certain number of extra carryons are allowed and have to be scheduled months in advance.

What exactly does a thundershirt do? How is it different from just dressing up your dog in a regular old sweater? I've always laughed at that commercial.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Well the reason for looking on orbitz et. al. is it makes it easier to see flight times for all flights. They can't do a red eye nor do they want to get home at like 2am. I don't think they mind directly buying through the air company, this is just to see what they want ideally. Luckily their days are insanely flexible. So we figure we'd find the times then it'd show which air companies to call to see if they could do that particular flight.

As for the meds, I think it's best if the vet does it for them. only because of the diabetes in the dog. I'd be worried recommending something to them without seeing if the vet gives the OK. Also, the dogs a biter so the vet has an easier time doing some of that shit.

The cat I'm not to worried about as she's similar to what you've described in yours. She's only 11 but you'd think she was 28 (aka extremely calm). They usually drive everywhere in a motorhome and the cat comes with them. She just sits on my mom's lap the entire time chill as ever.

Also, ya they aren't coming out until the the last week in june and all of july so we have quite a few months before the flight. And that could be pushed even further if needed (my mom's a teacher, dad's retired so they have the whole summer in which to work with).

To address Indeed's question: Thundershirt is like one of those compression shirts they give autistic kids so they'll act right.

Essentially it's like swaddling a babby

it is comforting and reduces anxiety

My dates were flexible and I booked my flights about a month or so in advance, but i was travelling off season so that probably matters.

I was referring to the rescue remedy. They could try the thundershirt, but I don't think it'd be enough for this dog.

The thundershirt shit is miraculous, watch the videos, it works -- worked great on Maggie. RR is good but it isn't a SOLO thing, it's better combined with a thundershirt or some babby benedryl
