Want some good YA fiction? Go read Lord of the Flies or something. Far better.
The first half of the last book was pretty shitty but I think you are overstating it a little.

Seriously? They sat in a tent in the middle of the woods for half the book, and it JUST SO HAPPENED that someone HAPPENED to be walking past and TALKING ABOUT VITAL INFORMATION. The rest of the book was just Harry moping. There might have been some other shit going on but that was the lasting impression I had of the book which isn't a good one

    When did that happen?

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Lin is a pile of wrong on this one.

    1. Her writing for her target audience was excellent. I have seen way wayyyyyy too many authors write a series that they can't hold up, because they get lost halfway through and don't know how to finish shit and end up wandering all over the place turning a great series into shit (staring at your grave Robert Jordan). You really get the sense she knew exactly where she was going with the whole series, and even stated from the beginning it was to be 7 books and never moved from that. I mean, I have to say, I love the way she would keep taking things that don't seem important in earlier books and weave them into later parts of the plot. (for example, Sirius Black is mentioned in the very first chapter of book 1, and see how all that falls into place).

Getting kids to read is also A+ in my book no matter what. Hell I even give that Twilight chick some credit for getting kids into reading even though the series sounds like shit (I probably will never read them, even if they were amazing as vampires have never been my thing). Having a kid read something less word-intensive by their own choice and be really into it is going to do far more in creating a life long reader than forcing them to read something they are not going to enjoy (when we read Lord of the Flies back in the day, I think I was one of maybe 3 in the class that wasn't moaning and groaning throughout it all).

    2. It's not like they can't read Joyce AND Rowling or something. I read Rowling to Austin, Snicket(Handler) to Margret Mitchell. I think it's far more important to have a wide range of likes than to pigeon-hole yourself into only reading the big stuff. Hell, when I was middle-school age (when kids are getting into HP and Twilight nowadays) I was really into Micheal Crichton on one hand and reading those silly teenage murder mystery book things on the other (we used to call them Point books because they were published by Point, basically someone died or was getting stalked or some shit and kids had to figure it out and they were "scary"). Definitely dumb books, but I still enjoyed them even if they weren't nearly on the level of Crichton.

    3. The Never Ending Story book sucks. Well, half of it is amazing and half of it sucks. For those that may remember, The Never Ending Story actually had a sequel with Jonathan Brandis as Bastian. I remember seeing the sequel, and being like, "WTF IS THIS SHIT. Dumb sequel is dumb, why ruin the story?"

Then I read the book. Turns out the first movie is pretty accurate and follows the first half of the novel. I guess someone decided to make a movie of the second half of the novel (which was also pretty accurate), which was the one with Jonathan Brandis. Bastian turns into a whiny brat and is insanely annoying. If I ever read the book again, I would probably just stop at the part that the movie ends. It's funny you would put that above HP complaining about the same thing, where this is the whole half of the book sucking, vs. half of 1 book in a 7 part series sucking.

I would really pity your kids if you told them they couldn't read something just because it isn't up to your standards. That to me is no worse than telling a kid they aren't allowed to play basketball even though they like it, they must do ballet because it's "better".

If I had kids they'd read nothing but Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchet.

I have the feeling they will just learn the word "why" to spite you for the rest of your life.

I'm going to make my newborn learn how to read and then give them my autobiography so they don't become a failure like their father.
