Random Fail: First World Problems

All the fire alarms just went off. Glad I wasn't home alone because I would have probably lost my shit. Nothing like a house fire once to freak you out.

They have to be cycled every couple weeks to make sure they're all working or they go off. (Just learned that ) But the good news is that they're all connected so if anything does happen we'll know anywhere in the house.

But ugh. Heart racing right before laying down no bueno

Our old apartment, people would smoke weed in the hallways setting them off. They'd go off about every 2-4 weeks and the manager refused to give the codes to the fire department so they would blast for about an hour or two before she would get to the complex to turn them off

I'm upset with myself. I consider myself to be socially progressive and shit and I feel like I am in the wrong here. Tonight on FB I saw one of my gay dude friends announce his engagement to his boyfriend, and they did this by posting the stereotypical hand in hand photo with the caption "He said yes!". My immediate reaction was one of "that's not right" and I am mentally beating myself up over this. I'm happy for them. I want them to be happily married. I'm all for gay rights and equality and I don't know WHY my initial gut reaction was a negative one. Stupid mental gymnastics.

here's the thing. Most people are a little racist/bigoted. Humans see patterns where there are none. One generation is insanely fast turnover for a society to completely change its ideals. If you're old enough to post on BG, you're old enough to have been raised in a situation in which being gay was, if not outright bad, at least... frowned upon. Pretty much all of us would have grown up with "You're gay!" as a legitimate schoolyard insult.

By all means, be upset with yourself. But you didn't let those thoughts become actions or words. That's a damn sight better than all too many people do. Think about yourself and why you reacted that way. What emotions are tied up in your reaction?

But really, I'll just mirror the "Everyone's a little..." thing, too. I've got a couple quirks that are inevitably the result of growing up in a redneck region, but I'm also aware other life experiences have exposed me to things others my same age here have not. For the most part, it tends to relate to things one may attribute to stereotypes that I just don't like seeing, like practically wearing your pants on the back of your knees or coming to this country and making no effort to learn English. Overall, I just try to file it away into the, "Well, if it's not hurting anyone..." box and hope for the best.

I have to be completely vague in this post BUT I got back today from a teacher's conference that was anything but a teacher's conference and every signs of cultish tendencies. Isolation, praying on emotions, and doing whatever they could to not get people to leave.

We had to sign NDAs before coming in to keep the conference confidential, so I don't trust to say any more than that, but boy was that wacky, and I now have a glimpse of what it feels like to leave Scientology or some shit.

What's crazy is the person hosting is semi-wellknown and little is spoken online about any of these conferences (obv because the NDA). Most stuff is just praise on how inspiring this person is. This person DID do something great in education years ago, but this just ruined everything I ever thought about this person. It was creepy.

Our school got a grant to have us go to it, and I was asked to. I only knew a little about the organization and there seemed no reason to believe it was anything but a teacher conference. Researching is not going to pull up any of this stuff, either, though some mention the host being a possible fraud.

Anxiety and depression I thought I was beginning to have a handle on has been getting worse the last few weeks. On the plus side however I still have meds to take so started then again last week. I also am becoming self aware that my therapist I was seeing while very nice wasn't the best fit concerning working through my issues.

It's too hectic right now to go through the process again to find someone new but definitely on the to do list once my vacation and sick time resets come January. In the meantime I need to just slow the fuck down and try not to over analyze everything 24/7 which is much easier said than done.
