Just how often do you think that shit gets used lol? Supposed to be an infrequent scan. Anyways seems like I was wrong new ones can be a little more expensive. Then they also need their own shielded room and suite and a quick article suggests that it can be upwards of $5 mil for the setup. Then the people working on the equipment who get paid handsomely because it's sophisticated equipment and you also need radiological training. And then the hospital tacks on some to help pay the bills associated with running said hospital and obviously to try and make money, contrasts add to more, and radiologist pretty much tack on whatever they want at the end. And mind radiologist make a ton even by doctors standards

The MRI I went to was in constant use. They were putting in an even newer one across the hall. Those things don't sit idle, especially here.

The margins are certainly good on those machines in the long run but they really don't have the longest shelf life. My buddy is a radiologist and he makes a fucking killing.

MRI and CT is going to run all day erry day, and administration will scream bloody murder if either is down for any length of time. Training is specialized by model and expensive.

Pretty much any job working with radiation does because radiation is scary. That said a thought occurs. MRIs are just magnets anyways so why are they done and read by radiologists? I even think the radioactive contrasts are just for other scans too though haven't really read up on that side of things

I'd assume that's because most imagining does use ionizing radiation not to mention aren't they the ones that use it for treatment which requires extra training and such. Though I guess some might just do non ionizing imaging and screw the radiation training? Fuck if I know

Fuck the US healthcare system with a BBC in the ass with no lube. I can get an MRI done for under 100 bucks with top of the line equipment here in Vietnam.

Paid $250 bucks.

Insurance paid like 40k or so iirc. I always assume the cost is about 20-25% of the billed amount.

Airenn, that's not an insurmountable amount. It costs $14,000 for a 5-6 hour appointment to give me my medication... and I have to do that every 4 weeks. My response, when they try to hit me with 30-50k bills is "No, I cannot pay that. Sorry, but you need to figure something out. No, I cannot afford $10 a month. No, I cannot afford anything." and eventually they get their shit together and send it off to insurance like they should have to start with. Now, my situation is different from yours. Chronic treatments aren't the same as ER... but there are still resources for dealing with it.

I don't recall what happened to get you into the ER, but I am confident there are ways you can get help. Call the hospital's billing department, explain what happened and about your financial situation, and ask if there's anything they can do to work with you on it. You can probably get the amount reduced (through charities or whatever), and then set up payment plans to pay the remainder slowly. Be polite; you need these people to work with you.

All because I was walking through a door way a little too quickly. I can't stop replaying it all in my head. If I had just adjusted the box I was carrying sideways... something so simple.

I know I don't post here often, but as someone who went through a bankruptcy after 3 years on workers comp, a $4k bill is not worth filing for. Bankruptcy itself costs, depending on chapter, $1600 and up to file with a lawyer. So almost half of that bill just to screw yourself for up to seven years. You could offer $1k to the hospital or ask to file a form for bill charity where hey wipe your bill completely based upon financial status and extenuating circumstances. There's plenty of other options. I've been down that road with insurance. Just breathe.
