I'm still renting. I passed the responsibility along to the landlord because I'm paying him to maintain this shit.

Two random fails don't make it right. Or three or four...
Signed an agreement for a one year lease to rent a 2 floor, 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom house with my younger bro for $2200 and decided to invite a friend to stay as a roommate.
Being the honest person I am, I decided to tell my landlord about the situation. I was asked, "what do you plan to do with your roommates rent money?" I shouldn't have told them anything and I never legally had to. Fail #1
I absolutely knew what the greedy fucker was going for after that. "Since you have invited a roommate to stay with you, if he is still there after January 2017 we will be raising your rent to $2700. This will give him ample time to find a new home." Fail #2
That night after giving me the rent hike news, I noticed a puddle of water on the counter in the kitchen. Then the pitter patter. Is that the sound of karma?
Their roof sprang a leak. Fail #3
They even came to, "inspect the roof," yet all we talked about was the roommate, right in front of him. They told me they could ask him to leave tomorrow if they wanted to, but they were being nice by letting him stay until January. They asked, "what do we gain from this situation? Your rent is now less per month but we still receive the same amount." They even said, "we regret advertising it for $2200 and could have gotten more." Claiming a 4 bedroom can pull $3000 when they're full of shit. (I immediately found a 2 floor, 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, for much cheaper at $1700.)
Anyway, they half asked the roof and only tarped the section that was leaking, in the kitchen thankfully. Then the other side of the roof started leaking. Tarped the entire roof now.
Had a quick look at our tenancy agreement we both signed and had a good chuckle. They never attached a sheet of additional terms, which include pets, roommates, smoking, etc. In other words, they can't raise the rent beyond the current legal rate unless we agree to such a large increase.
It is possible they can increase the rent beyond legal standards (2% + inflation) which is 3.7% for 2017. If there is major construction needed to be done, they can apply to have it raised past that.
Well, it has snowed a few times since then. It builds up on the roof, then with enough weight, slips and slides down the tarp. Which was too much weight for their gutters and ripped them right off. Fail #4
I can't wait for the new year.
I imagine it will go something like this.
"We have to buy a new roof so we will be raising your rent next month."
Thanks, but here's my 30 day notice. 8D
Why not just buy a house for a lower mortgage than you're paying in rent?
But yeah, he can't up your rent because you added a roommate. Nice try though jerkface landlord.
I live in Vancouver. Housing prices are just as if not more ridiculous.
2 fails that happened yesterday.
First one: in the morning I was picking up a job and one of the roads I use has cars parked either side and only enough room left over for 1 car at a time to drive down. I was half way down when a car approached from the other end, not stopping to let me through. I had to pull into a gap between 2 cars, but I did it too sharply and hit another car's bumper with the top of my rear wheel well. There was a guy painting the building it was parked outside and he knew who drove it so we exchanged details. Could be a couple hundred quid, depending if he wants to repair it (not heard back from him yet).
Second one: was walking to my car in the evening and walked on the pavement around a corner. It was dark and raining and another person was walking towards me so I went to walk on the outside edge. The kerb though is slate and was wet and had leaves on it and of course I slipped and fell right onto my knees and then used the heel of my right hand to break my fall. My knees are all bruised/scraped to buggery and while my right hand/arm doesn't hurt when it's not doing anything, when I try to grip something, be it pulling or pushing I get some pain in my forearm. Hopefully it will clear up over the weekend.
Bay area is just as bad. Shits and giggles we were looking at houses that would be about a 40 mile commute each way, prices were somewhat reasonable in the 600k range for a new house. Fucking property taxes would have added about an additional 1000 a month needed to set aside for the year. Assuming 5% down, we would have had a 6k a month mortgage roughly.
Pretty similar here. I can find cheaper... if I want a condo or rather shitty place. Or in one case at an "undisclosed location" lol. The place my parents are renting still has original plumbing and electric from the 50s (and was done poorly by people who clearly didn't do that for a living. Like pretty sure anyone with google could do better) and isn't big by any means but in a decent area and I believe it's valued at around 450k though the owner is sure they can get 500k and uses that as an excuse to try and raise the rent without fixing the problems with it. Even trailer homes in parks are up in the 200-300k range. And forget anything on the hills on the outskirts of town and/or adjacent to our state park which is in town
Haha. Customer comes in to store to pay. Brings out a huge ass wallet and apparently the only real form of payment she has is 1 credit card... but for some reason despite not carrying cash there is some loose change in it too. Claims she has never been anywhere where her single credit card wasn't accepted. First off BS plenty of places only accept certain cards. 2nd why the fuck do you have a gigantic wallet for 1 credit card. No 2nd card. No debit. No checks. Only a single dollar bill and a few pennies in cash. Da fuq
edit: I think the best part is she thought it was crazy completely unreasonable we didn't take the card but brought in 2 boxes of paper that had half a roll of duct tape around them and thought that was fine. Like had 3 pieces going all the way around a few times on both length and wide ways. Then another piece around the edge of the lid wrapped around multiple times then the handles were taped up so couldn't really grab them that well.
I hate places that don't take cards or impose a minimum limit. This isn't the 60s anymore.
I don't mind cash only for certain bars but anything else is stupid.
While we don't take cards this person didn't know that. What she was upset with is that she only every carries 1 card ever and that we didn't take it... and well welcome to the real world. A lot of businesses don't accept every credit card and every debit card
Also small business that primarily does big work with other businesses and even individuals when it's a big job they almost always scheduled and billed out.... so accepting cards at the store front for walk ins wouldn't really be cost efficient.
I don't know if any of you guys have tried nutrisystem before but the food is absolutely awful.
And 2 years sitting in my cabinets for storage certainly didn't make it any better.
Found some old artwork on my hard drive trying to get my scanner working again. Always hate finding stuff that's 3+ years old because it reminds of how bad I was even though I haven't really been actively trying to improve for a while now. In general, I only scanned things back in the day if I thought they were good, too. So, there's that mix of, "What was I thinking?" and wanting to barf going on.
Got the scanner working, at least!
Just got to the in-laws, and my fil bought my daughter a Bill ORielly children's book. Not having that thing in my house.
190 minute delay departing Boston this morning because of the weather (all of it spent sitting on the plane), miss my connecting flight and now get to spend 5 hours at the Minneapolis Airport. Joy.
Its USO like thing has very nice chairs.
