My best friend's mom has been a customer service rep for Nynex/Bell/Verizon for as long as I've known her (and my friend) which is at least 22 years. She had one story that I liked as a kid.
There was a guy trying to get help with setting up a new service in an apartment he was going to move into in NYC. He called to start the process of scheduling an appointment and all that shit. When it go to what apartment and floor he was on, he couldn't remember. He said it was "something 10;" he couldn't remember the floor he should have been on (i.e. 510 is the 5th floor).
My friend's mom was trying to be helpful. She asked him if he could picture what the number was on the door to his floor when he walked up, but he said he took the elevator. She asked if he could remember what number he pressed when he got on the elevator, but he couldn't remember other than it was on the left or something. She asked if he could look at a building directory, but he said they hadn't changed it yet because he hadn't moved in completely. She asked if he had a lease or something that he could look at, but he had misplaced it.
Finally, she got fed up. She said, "Sir, if you were to jump out your window, how many windows would you pass on the way down?" He responded "Oh, that's easy. Three."
