I received a design concept from a customer last tuesday. They asked me to design a working model for testing off of their concept drawing. No problem. Normal design time + internal testing + design approval is 2-3 weeks. I get a phone call this morning saying I had to have a complete design and working sample sent to the east coast by end of day today. I'll take Unreasonable Deadlines for $2000, Alex. Apparently one of our marketing guys has been talking to the customer and designing stuff with them for the last 4 weeks. He scheduled a product demo with them for tomorrow morning...and somehow this fuck up is my fault. Last time I checked, I was the design manager and everything is supposed to go through me. Bah...this is bullshit.

Hate this bullshit and I let my managers know when they give me unreasonable deadlines on projects (not your type but every job has its own). I still get it done, don't get me wrong, but when quality suffers or things are overlooked, I give them the "I fucking told you so" look, and they know not to complain about it.

So after all that bullshit about getting a sample to the east coast yesterday, I got a call late last night from my "boss that isn't really my boss" asking what happened. I threw our marketing guy under the bus then got in the bus and drove away. I didn't even feel bad for doing it.

This morning I got a call from said marketing guy apologizing for putting me in an impossible situation. He won't be doing any other design work behind my back. Vindication!

Doing this to people who make my job harder because of their incompetence is one of the greatest feelings in life.

It's kinda steep though, paid like $40 for 8 lbs at the vet yesterday. I'm sure the larger quantities are a bit cheaper.

That sucks. One of our cats has issues with kidney stones (some cats are prone to them) so she has to be on special food and it is super expensive. Luckily my wife is a vet tech so she gets an employee discount on the food but even then it is pretty pricey.

Because of my school schedule, I am now being transfered from my Rover job to something more permanent. I'm going to be busy all week with only Tuesday nights available for free time. Barely going to be able to see my son from now on and he will be spending the weekends my with ex.

In my senior year of college; Do i give up my steady job where I'm about to get a (small) promotion, or take a 3 month internship at Xerox so I can build on my future? Man this is a tough call.

Is the internship paid? Will you be out on the street after the internship ends if you don't have something else lined up? Is your current job relevant at all to your career goals?

If it is paid, you won't be on the street, and your current job isn't relevant to your future at all, I'd say that you should go for it. Intern positions are increasingly fought over and difficult to get into. Your post implies that this is something you can go ahead and do, and if that's true, and you'll be fine afterward, I'd say that you should go for it. In this day and age, the whole "I worked at my previous employer for twenty years"-type of dedication is becoming increasingly irrelevant to everyone but the most old-school sorts, and actual versatility and hands-on experience is prized.

I didn't see anything about paid/unpaid in the listing:

I won't be on the street, I have great financial aid I could live on, and my folks let me live with them without paying rent, but It took me 3 years to find work, and the job I have is tolerable, but does next to nothing for my future. I don't know, it's just a big risk. I knew that one day I would have to make this decision, it's just tough to take that plunge. I'm getting my Bachelor's of science, and one of my concentrations is marketing, so this would be ideal.

Internships are 10% learning how to do the job and 90% making professional connections...take the internship and leave a good impression on people, and you might get a paid position with that company soon, or at the very least get a good reference that will help you in the future.

It doesn't sound like it's that big of a risk. What is the absolute worst that could happen? You don't get an offer from Xerox and don't find other work immediately - but you have support from your folks and at least add to your resume. Do you really want to be stuck in a "tolerable" job forever?

Seems like a no-brainer to me.

This x1000. Be punctual and have a great attitude - basically be an enjoyable person to work with and you will make good connections like it's nothing.

Indeed. Internships are fantastic. Don't be a total doormat, as that won't win you much in the way of respect, but do a good job, be appreciated, and remember the people that appreciate you.

Also, if you haven't already, always remember to review potential employers at sites like GlassDoor.
