Yeah but by then can stay home by herself. Shame they don't have anything for the younger ones

I mean I know my situation was rare as fuck, my mom was a stay at home mom for all 3 of us and even though I was born in 1978 almost 18 years after my oldest sister so I never had to deal with after school stuff so our house was the one other kids came over to. My mom never got paid for such and never would ask , everyone in the neighborhood just all kind of grew up together and it was normal to basically look after each other. We didn't live in the best area of Tampa as it was.

Several years ago when I had some pregnancy scares/ contemplating family planning the sheer cost of childcare was enough to convince us if I couldn't stay home we just wouldn't have then regardless of any other desire. While there were multiple other reasons we chose not to , it was definitely a huge factor. It's ridiculous but at the same time I understand especially in today's world how you need to hopefully be able to trust those in charge of your child's care.

I started staying at home alone if no one got home before me back in 4th grade... also when I started walking home too since yay California schools charging to ride the bus and we not having that much money. Got even better when my hs charged us to "rent" use of the lockers

Until I could drive, I was usually stuck at school for an extra 2 hours. Responsible me would try to knock out what homework I didn't do during the day, but there was also kid me that'd play chess/backgammon if those teachers were around, screwed around on the computer(s) if the librarians weren't around/being bitches, maybe brought my gameboy that day, or basically whatever else wasn't work. Either way, still lots of bored time.

You should probably look up your credit score. It's free to do once a year. If only to prevent identity theft.

Today I was visited at my door by two Girl Scouts selling their cookies. Now normally, I love me some Girl Scout cookies, but these girls were probably 11 or 12 and had no adult supervision. Instead of buying cookies I became an old man and launched into a mini lecture about how unsafe this was and how they needed to be smarter than this. They didn't get any money from me but I hope they learned something. Stupid parents.

My mom worked at the school I did as a teacher, so she would take myself and my neighbor home at the end of the day. If we took the bus, she got home before we did because it took so long for it to drop people off. I really wish there was a similar option for us. I think if anything, next year we'll pay for care, and hopefully get to know the parents of the kids going to the school, so maybe we could trust someone to pick her up and watch her a couple hours.

And yeah, school only has one bus and it drops off in one spot. You have to pay to use it, and it only takes them ten minutes to get there, so I wouldn't get there in time.

The number of people in this thread burying their head in the sand over their credit is astonishing.

Go to credit karma, answer some questions. Get a score.

If it's below 700, find out why and fix it. If it's above 760 or so you're golden. 850 is max.

Edit: that pic is huge, I'm on my phone, sorry.

This I just can't fucking even. I hit rock bottom a few years ago due to horrible mistakes catching up to me. I went from a barely 400 two years ago to 670 now and climbing by month as I pay off shit and just put the cards away. I know better than to close them however. I've had 2 years of no collections , no late payments and my own unsecured cards in my name. Capital one and AMEX have been very good to me and I have been in return the same.

You may not like it but credit is a necessity it today's world. Just educate yourself about it and live within your means. I wish I took that advice 15 years ago or knew someone willing to take the time to tell me.

I'm not burying my head, I know mine is bad. It's gonna continue being bad until my student loans get paid off which will probably be...a long time. My score is actually about to get worse because in 3 months I'll have finished paying off my truck and I'll lose that "good debt". Credit is a fucked up thing.

I think we have different definitions of necessity though due to what sounds like a rather different experiences. 15 years and literally never needed it once. It's been vaguely helpful a few times like when my bank gets mad at me for spending certain amounts a day and I wanted something right then and didn't want to call and bitch at the bank. And the perks with the new card are pretty good though would love one with better perks if possible. All this talk of free travel sounds amazing. And it's been really useful when SE started being little bitches about processing payments from the same card more often than once a week. But this getting collection calls and late payments naw that aint me. 100% history of paying before interest even accrues (well on cc did have a loan for 2 months way back in 2003) and save up the rest each month. Now maybe if I had plans to buy a house in the next few years it might be pretty useful then but that's not going to be soon and mine should be good unless we get to Zet's point...

Hmmm hadn't thought of that. That's pretty good reason though. But it appears I'm good.... and now it's offering me a ton of cards. Odd though it isn't showing the loan I got basically right out of bootcamp. Just my CC history.

i'm at 662. considering I've been credit-null for the last decade, and I used my credit card to get me through a few months of extremely tight finances, the fact that i'm back above 650 is good. I've been using the fuck out of my card, trying to rack up points and history, paying it back down any time it gets more than a couple hundred on it, with an auto-pay configured every month so i'm always making well over the min payment.

you want good credit for shit like house/car/whatever loans, plus sometimes employers look at it too, and the only way to build credit is to actually USE your credit, and that means not just paying your card down to 0 every month. And if you're using your credit card, you want a way to offset that interest (though if you do it right you shouldn't be paying much of that anyway even with stupid rates) at least somewhat and points are a good way to do that.

$40k in student loans over my head and my score is still mid-700's. It's all about staying consistent and paying regularly, over the minimum as much as possible.

You guys in the ~780s have credit that is way too high.

You aren't capitalizing on opening up credit cards for the sign up bonus for spending you already do, and then closing them. That is free money, fuck having nearly a ridiculous 800, you are leaving money on the table

that is borderline fraud/theft, and it hurts your credit for a reason.
