Random Fail: First World Problems

Gather round children, I have a story to tell. The story of the worst ISP.

Wednesday: Everything began last Wednesday. I was moving apartments, so I called my ISP(Fontier Communications) and told them I needed to move my service. My old apartment had FIOS, which was pretty bitchin, but my new apartment did not, so I would be stuck with DSL. I told them I was moving over the weekend and they asked for my account number. They told me that the account number was using their old system and was no longer valid, dispite having had it for just over two years. They told me it would take 24 hours to get a new number for my new apartment and that they would call me back when it was finished. I gave them my number and went on with my day.

Thursday: I waited all day and no one called. Finally, I decided to call in and see what was going on. This person told me that the new number had been created, but was for my old apartment, and therefor they would need to make a new one for my new apartment. And you guessed it, it would take another 24 hours to complete. I gave them my number again and asked them to call me back on Friday.

Friday: I actually got a call this time, and was told my new number was set up and that they would send someone out on Monday to hook everything up. I asked if they could give me a time estimate since I would have to be a home when they came. Naturally they could not. They also told me that due to the fact that I was changing from FIOS to DSL, my rate would change. I figured it would go down, but not so they told me. I would be paying $10 more per month. $10 more for less bandwidth. I was told there was nothing they could do.

Monday: I tell my boss that I'm going to try to work from home(I'm a programmer) and that hopefully I would have internet some time during the day to sync up. The day passes, I do what I can with no internet, but no one shows up. I call in again, and am told that for DSL instillation they don't send anyone out and that I was mistaken in assuming someone would be coming out. So once again I was lied to. They also told me my DSL modem had been shipped out, but they could not give me a time estimate or even a tracking number because they didn't have one. This put me in a bit of a spot because my apartment office closes at 5:30 and I don't get off work until 6. Worse yet, my apartment office refused to tell me if any packages had been dropped off for me, saying they were 'doing me a favor by even holding packages at all'.

Tuesday and Wednesday: I am essentially forced to drive all the way to my apartment and then back to work to make sure I get the package. This forces me to have to work even later to make up the hours. And naturally, the package does not show up.

Thursday: I stay home the entire day to make sure I get the package, as I don't trust UPS at all. Nothing shows up again, but I get an automated phone message telling me "Your modem has shipped today". I've had it. I call in and explain that shipping my modem a full week after I requested the transfer is unacceptable. I'm told that the message was in error and that the modem had been shipped on Tuesday. This means the person I talked to on Monday once again flat out lied to me. He told me that according to the tracking information, it should be delivered by the end of the day. Once again I wait, and once again no package.

Friday(Today): This is the last straw. I call in and lay down the ultimatum. Either someone drives out to my apartment, calls me on my cell phone so I can drive to my apartment, and gives me a modem in person by midnight, or I am canceling my account and demanding a refund. The person on the phone tells me they would like to contact UPS and see what happened. I tell them "are you absolutely sure you want to leave this in the hands of a third party?" and they tell me yes. I come to find out that UPS refused to deliver the package because it didn't have my apartment number on it, something I made absolutely sure to give the first, second, and third people I called. Once more, they would not deliver it until Monday. I once again state my terms: Either the modem is in my hands by midnight or they cancel my account and refund me in full. I finally get someone to come out to my apartment, call me, wait for me to arrive, and give me the modem. A full 10 days later.

I then learn from the engineer who gave me the modem that even if I had received it, no one had activated my line so it wouldn't have worked to begin with. Not surprisingly he is the only competent person in this whole debacle, and stays to make sure everything gets hooked up properly and that I have internet. He also gives me a phone number of his supervisor and told me I should explain what I had been through, including the $10 increase which he said "doesn't sound right at all".

That's how I spent the last 10 days, and how I learned that there is a worse ISP than Comcast. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to punch kittens.

I just took out a citibike from beside Washington Square Park. walked it for a bit, got on it for about 4 metres and then got stopped by a parks officer. Another 50$ fine. Homeless and two tickets in a week god damn.

The quality of the show has deteriorated hugely as its been going on. Case in point: Its now on Hiatus.

They don't know what to do with some of the characters: Anne has been redeveloped about 10 times, Aziz Ansari's initial cute funniness has turned into him just shouting annoying lines while popping out his eyeballs (we get the joke Aziz, you don't need to shout all your lines).

I loved the show, but have been steadily more and more dissapointed as its been going on.

My main problem is I apply for jobs well below my experience level because I don't want a real job/salary job but rather just something to do while I'm going to school. I hate the internet as a parent. You can't look anything up without finding ten million people saying you are a terrible parent if you do X and ten million people saying you are a terrible parent if you don't. It makes it impossible to figure out what the fuck is actually good and what the fuck is actually bad for your kid. Talk about the most judgmental people on the planet holy shit.

To give an example:

My daughter started walking so I was looking into getting one of those toddler leashes. Never thought this was some huge ass debate. Turns out you are terrible for using one instead of holding their hands even though people reported having kids who pulled away and ran out into the street, STILL TERRIBLE PARENT FOR WANTING TO USE A SAFETY NET. Not to mention those saying the leash takes away freedom, but somehow holding onto their hand so their fingers hurt doesn't? People need to stop giving a shit no matter what a parent chooses.

Oh, and pretty much anything dealing with children includes "back in my day" retardedness.
