So about a year ago, a woman I used to work with was dating this guy, someone else I used to work with. They got engaged, he cheated on her, and then a few months later the woman he cheated with turned around and cheated on him with someone else, who also worked at this place. Huge workplace scandal I was glad to stay the hell out of, even though he tried to ask my advice because he was "heartbroken" over losing Girl #2, and I basically told him I couldn't help him because I wasn't getting involved. I'm still friends with the guy on Facebook even though we haven't spoke in quite a while. So he posts a pic today of him ... with the first girl ... and they look like they're pretty chummy.

Just ... sigh. She's an idiot for getting back with him, and he's a dick for going back with her when he made it pretty damn clear to me that he was more interested in the second girl (who is now pregnant by the guy she left him for).

    I weep for humanity.

I don't in those kind of situations. I just laugh. They should already know the person they are dating has no qualms about cheating, since that is how their relationship started. And then they are shocked if it happens again? Whatever.

Views and opinions expressed are strictly from the point of view of somebody who hasn't even bothered to have a relationship.

Most of those 4 week temp positions turn into permanent, "no temp agency involved", working for the company directly positions.
Getting with the times is a company that goes through a temp agency, pays the temp agency 16$/hr, the temp agency pays the individual (you in this case) 12$/hr and the company get's an employ that does work, has minimal responsibilites, but more importantly, works well in the enviroment with their other co-workers.

I've had 4 or 5 "temp jobs" turn into actual "hey we noticed you working for us for the past month, and your not late, you get along with co-workers, and you put forth effort" "We'd like to pay you 13$/hr" Company wins, temp agency wins, employee wins.
food for thought. but your probably gonna have to cut back on the FFXI.

Think of it as companies beta testing employee's, makes alot more sense.

That's not always true. I've had several temp positions over the last year, and they've all ended when the contract ended, if not earlier. I was usually brought on to complete a specific project and there was never any opportunity for actual hiring. There's a lot of times where it doesn't matter how well you work/how good of an employee you are, many businesses only do temp contracts because they'll need temporary help.

That said, how are people even going about getting facetime with people when online applications are the only way to get oneself noticed? Every company I've tried to get in contact with in methods other than the online application have responded extremely negatively to this. Maybe it's just horrible luck?

If you ask some older people, apparently the trick is to annoy them until they hire you. But I also say the workforce is different today than it was even 10-15 years ago, and not just for loleconomy reasons.

I have had this issue, as well. It used to be that you were considered a go-getter and highly motivated if you went out of your way to go into the place and fill out an application/attempt to speak with the manager, but nowadays if you even so much as call them, they are extremely rude with you for even so much as daring to try to talk to them.

One thing I did learn when I was at the height of my job search is that they'll post a lot of positions that aren't actually open just to see what's out there and have a pool from which to choose if necessary. I called a good dozen places that told me, "Oh, that position has been filled. Have a nice day." And these weren't the ones that were up for several months - most were up for several days, at most. That's a pretty shitty practice, posting jobs that don't exist (or not removing them after they've been filled).

I've found online applications to be the absolute worst thing to ever happen to job hunting. It isn't the way it used to be. My first job, I called them, they scheduled me to come in and I went to the place and filled out an application, was interviewed, and hired that same day. Now it is considered the rudest thing if you so much as dare to want to speak with a live person. And people wonder why it's so easy to get disheartened with it ...

That's why I went to a temp agency, especially while I'm at school. Getting to the point where I could actually get a live interview was so difficult, especially while I was attending school full time. I needed to get a job right away and working for myself wasn't working.

This is the truth. My parents couldn't understand why I had such a hard time finding a job. My mother's worked at the same place for 24 years, and my dad has worked at the same place for 43 years. So they have absolutely no fucking clue how it is to look for a job nowadays.

For legal purposes, companies have to post a job opening even if they already have someone hired or soon to be hired (especially if they hire from within). My company has done this before. Our office secretary made a slight upgrade to administrative assistant, and even though everyone knew she had the job already, we still legally had to post about the position. Got 100+ applications in the 24 hour period the posting was up.

I feel for those people who apply not knowing the position's guaranteed to someone else.

Job hunting really sucks these days, but in some cases it's necessary. People want jobs posted online, and when they do, there is a flood of applications for them. There were 1200 applications for the 20~ open positions at my company. This came after some kind of filtering step too. Imaging how annoying it would be if 1200 people were calling you trying to be a 'go getter'. What really works best these days is nepotism. Knowing someone who already works there who can put in a good word for you.

Speaking of, a contract ending abruptly a week before Thanksgiving. Needed the money.

I won't argue this one bit, alot of them are. and then the convo went in the direction that i was gonna mention, which is almost 11 years since i was in the job market, so i imagine alot has changed.
I usually always told the company that i wanted to find permanent work, and so they put me into those temp w/ a chance to hire positions.

I have to agree with the change in today's job market. My parents tried telling me to go out and do that when I was looking a few years ago, but the only way was to apply online.
I've only gotten the jobs I've had through friends and family who worked there already. Its lame but in today's world it is literally more about who you know than what you know. Cliche, but it's worked for me.

It's just so fucking broken that I've basically given up hope of being employed. I still keep the online applications up/refreshed when they say they're due to expire, but I've NEVER had an online app lead to an interview.
(Also, while we're here, If I were emperor of the world, not the first, but certainly in the first batch of things I'd do, would be to fucking dismantle Unicru. FUCK those assholes.)

So I spend the time you'd normally use on the pavement, reading up news and issues and crunchy stuff instead, trying to come up with something that would lead to employing myself and others.
Trouble is, a good idea that ALSO works with starting with less than 100k, is rare. Dozens of the things, but the initial is just too damned high.

I feel you. It took me 3 years to find the job I have now. And it's way beneath me. I must have put in over 300+ applications, and got a grand total of 2 interviews, not counting the job I eventually got. If you lived in Portland I could get you a job here, but...

Also DO NOT listen to job seeking advice of the last generation. i can't tell you how many times I've heard "go in and meet them! get them to recognize you!". I've had people snub me so many times for this its unreal. Just make yourself look great on paper and hope for the best.

I hear y'all on the job hunt gripe. Got my teaching cert two years ago, only gotten two interviews in all that time. And the worst part is, I have 3 more years until my cert expires which means if I don't get a job by then, that was all for nothing and would have to redo the program.

I worked as a paraprofessional (teaching English for state testing), but everyone told me it's better to sub because the schools get to know you and they will see you worked for them when you apply.

So now, even though we live in LA, I go down to SD as much as I can so the in-laws can watch my daughter while I sub (can't get daycare for subbing because of its unset schedule).

For my random complaint for the day, FUCK CHARLEY HORSES IN THE ASS. If you've never had one, it's a cramp that happens in your calf during the night. Usually I wake up and have like a second to react and if I don't prevent it, it turns into the worst pain ever that will leave me limping for the rest of the day. I usually get them 3-4 times a year, and when I was pregnant with my daughter I got them every night (I guess it's common to get while preggo and everyone says eat bananas, but that didn't do shit for me). When I told a mom this, she taught me the trick of standing up as soon as I feel it coming, and that works! So I had to do that every night. I got so pro at it. I then learned that even better if I just stretch my toes towards my knees it does the same effect (keeping the muscle taunt).

Recently it's been trying so hard to do it, I've been having to bend my toes all the time, but somehow last night it won, IT WON. FUCK THE PAIN. But maybe this means it won't try to do it every night....not fun though trying to keep track of kids while limping.

They can also be caused by dehydration, I believe. Maybe you get dehydrated during the night?

Maybe. I honestly think it's hereditary or something, because my mom has the same issue. And like I said, bananas seemed to help for all my preggo friends, but when I tried it back in the day, it didn't do shit.
