I guess I'm just a mean parent, but my sanity comes first. If they whine and scream and cry about the toy not working, that definitely does not get me to put the batteries back in. It's a great teaching moment too. My wife and I have been able to teach all of our kids how NOT to get what they want and teach them that calm communication works much better. The downside is that their logic and memory are impeccable and leave me speechless sometimes...

And don't underestimate your daughter's intelligence. 18 months-old kids are way smarter than people like to think.

Random fail today: We have muliple orders backlogged and I am the only employee right now. I have no way to fill the orders at all but it is still my fault when they don't get filled. Does anyone know of a job opening in package engineering?

    Edit: Happy Birthday Myrrh!

Yeah my response was more for Jaybar but I didn't realize that the didn't know your daughter was so young. Who doesn't know how old she is? Jeeze. BG lightweight.

I am pretty lucky with respect to the loud toy thing. My sons favorite toys are all non battery operated things like blocks and boxes and paper etc. He does play with the battery powered toys just not for extended periods of time.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Honestly most of her toys aren't loud. only other one is my parents bought her a teddy bear that sings zippidy do da really loudly, but she doesn't play with it too often. I think this one she just played it a lot this morning since it's new, but ya she has legos, books, coloring, etc. which are all quiet activities. It's not like the toy dog is bad for her or anything, just annoying for me.

@ Ace She doesn't get everything she wants. If she did, she'd be watching Lilo & Stitch about 6 times a day. No exaggeration. (She's even figured out how to get to it on my phone....)

I would never browse such a fail thread.

    Battleborn? lol

Also, never ask a crazy parent about a passport for the trip you're hopefully going on a week from now. That apparently made the bomb explode and made my Birthday absolute shit.

My apologies. I did not mean to make it sound like she was a spoiled brat getting everything she wants. I was just relating the way I handle my kids when they throw fits. Keep in mind that I have 5 of them and they are all boys. It's a bit different from having a single female child. My methods must, by default, be more strict.

Additional fail...2 days in a row! I left my keys to the warehouse at home today and the only other person that is usually here has gone home for the weekend already. I had to drive back home (30+ minutes each way) and get my keys which caused me to miss scheduled pick-up at 8:00am for one of the orders that aren't ready because we have no cardboard and I am the only employee! So now I got bitched at for being here late, not finishing the order AND missing the truck....I really need another job.

Way to enforce those gender stereotypes, bro. Pretty sure that basically all children are horrible little shits at the toddler stage, regardless of sex. You shouldn't let your feelings about how boys/girls "should" act/react determine how you treat them.

My current one is going to end very soon. I can see it coming. Unless something drastic changes, this company is going to go bankrupt. I am reluctant to leave because I do like the job and it is easy. But how long do I hang on? Will I come in one day to find out I no longer have a job?

@Blubbartron: What the fuck are you talking about? I wasn't even talking to you and you have inserted yourself into a conversation that has nothing to do with "enforc(ing) gender stereotypes". You are somewhat correct that all kids can be horrible little shits at 18 months. Dealing with 1 child that decides to throw a fit is many times easier than dealing with an 8 year-old that throws a fit because he can't have cereal for dinner and sets off his 5 year-old brother (who now also wants cereal) while his 2 older brothers decide to start arguing over whose belt belongs to whom and it turns into a brawl on the floor. And this whole commotion wakes up the baby. << This happened yesterday afternoon. This is the reason for stricter rules. It preempts most of that kind of behavior and makes it easier to diffuse it when it does happen because they know the rules and understand that there are consequences to that behavior.

I think the way that you stated "five boys versus one girl" made it sound as though the gender was a main factor, when really, the fact that you have five kids in general should be indicative enough that your parenting struggles might be more severe than Ksandra's, at least most of the time. At least I guess that's how it's been interpreted, unsure though.

Just called Gamestop accidentally to order a pizza and was wondering why the fuck the pizza shop was trying to offer me a PS4/XBoxOne. Yet despite that, I tried to order the pizza anyway. Feel like the biggest noob. LOL

I can understand that. But before anyone starts talking about "reinforcing stereotypes" and calling me bro they should spend some time with kids and tell me how different the boys are from the girls. I have 12 years of experience that says stereotypes exist because there are general behavioral trends that happen, even in 18 month-old kids. If your toddler boy is inclined to draw and play with dolls and put together scrapbooks with mom, you should be all over that and encourage it but if your toddler girl decides that putting holes in the wall and throwing rocks over the fence into the neighbors house is more fun, may god have mercy on your sanity. Just don't let either of them into mom's (or dad's I guess) makeup...they all draw with lipstick and eyeliner and the cat does not like to "be pretty".

All my grandparents passed away by the time I was three. I don't remember any of them (my dad's parents passed away before I was born), except I have one vague memory of my mother's father. When my sister and I were young, my mom got us a babysitter who was an older woman that had a farm with her husband. We used to call her "grandma" since we had no grandparents. We spend so many nights over there (demanding we'd get to sleep over). The woman had other children but they were all adults so she was fine with it. We used to have a blast, checking out the cows and playing on her player piano.

Anyway, we lost touch many years ago, but I found out today she passed away last month. Sucks, even though I hadn't talked to her in maybe 7 years, I really do feel like I lost my grandma today.

I was reading a story about Toronto mayor Rob Ford, and was thinking about how cool it would be for Chris Farley to play him in a movie. And then I remember he passed many years ago. Sadness.

With the rise of Netflix and other on-demand services on the digital front and basically no-hassle kiosks from Redbox, something like this is going to be either incredibly niche or outright difficult to profit with. While my folks had their video store when VHS tapes were the thing, we basically had to receive new inventory, document it, and keep track of it in case people steal or damage things. Naturally, stuff like game consoles would require a security payment if you're talking beyond some kind of dine-in lobby and you'll want to take sanitary concerns into consideration for upkeep there, too. Now add the hassles of a pizza place on top, which means making dough, receiving fresh ingredients, ordering more when needed, getting the hardware and maintaining it to cook your goods, coming up with a menu, packaging, food licensing, and possible delivery. Oh, and paying/training employees.

At this juncture, I think the best we can hope for is a Redbox outside a Pizza Hut or something. I'd consider something of an inverse to this an arcade that sells pizza (perhaps routinely ordering from another local store), but arcades have probably been a decline long before video stores. Maybe it'd work in the big cities, but lesser ones will struggle if not fail. Sucks for us nerds, as I'd love a good gaming friendly environment around here that wasn't just a bunch of cash grab kiddie ticket games. Could maybe actually make some local friends then.
