A mining company in my home town laid off 250 people today, with another 100 to go in January. My home town is very small and it is by far the largest employer of people in the county and surrounding areas. A lot of good people and friends I grew up with are out of work right before the holidays. If you got a job right now, be appreciative of that shit, man.
For the most part, people generally figure it out pretty early. But not always. It's also a lot more complicated than just gay or straight for some people. Bisexuals do in fact exist. Or sometimes people are mostly straight/gay, but not entirely. This can be confusing for some people, who feel like they need to pick one, but can't because, well, they're both/neither.
Got yelled at by my mom earlier for shopping at Target. Apparently, she believes everything she reads on the internet and boycotted Target some time ago for "not supporting US veterans, being a Muslim-owned, Christian-hating company, etc.". I finished my shopping at Target and came home to Snopes that crap. Of course, it's all false. How can I get my mom to stop believing EVERYTHING she reads on the internet? Seriously, it's just a matter of time before she gets scammed by a Nigerian prince. I love my mom, but her antics drive me fucking crazy.
I understand. I have to call my mom weekly to tell her to take some link or rant or scam off of facebook. She also loves to post personal information like her freakin address and what medications she is taking among other things. Two months ago she spammed all her facebook friends with a "fundraiser" website for mentally disabled children (she is a classroom aide for mentally disabled, so it probably had something to do with her interests). I followed the link to see what she had gotten into and immediately knew something was wrong when it asked me to sign in with my facebook name and password as well as enter a bunch of personal info. I had to explain to her for about the 1000th time what a phishing website is and how to stay away from them...This technology thing is not for people over 50.
It's amazing how many services I can cancel with minimal resistance by just telling operators over the phone or in person "my mum said so" lol
I find that it's the best overriding reason for absolutely any cancellation.
I had to move phone contracts and also ISPs, and they were convincing me to stay. One time I said "I know you mean well, but my mum said we have to move..." the guy laughed and said "I'm asian, I know how you feel man" and proceeded with my cancellations without resistance.
I need to finish up some research for class tonight and I have been trying for the past two hours to get onto the school's online database. Tried Firefox and IE at work and keep getting "Problem loading the page" errors. Would be nice if I could get on there so I can get my shit done, especially while it's slow at work.
same lmao, reminds me of having my mom cancel those old BMG subs everytime I got 10 cds for a penny.
The technique is a variation of the haggle technique I've been told, in places where the store manager allows it. In this instance, you as the man, probably (and should) will work with a woman too, will do this: (we'll go with man here)
The best example I can think of where deals can be pulled out of no where is a mobile phone store (in the UK, the chain store Phones4U is exceptionally notorious for being aggressive and securing a sale). So lets say you go in looking at a new phone.
You pick it up, a salesman asks if you're interested. You enquire more, but up to a certain point you go "hmm i don't know if my wife/girlfriend will let me" then you proceed to mope over it. Bonus points for bringing woman into the actual scene and having her act extremely aggressive on her part, or by holding a phone conversation where you proceed to get increasingly desperate until the salesman continues to knock on more and more offers/deals.
Depending on how you view yourself, it makes you either look 1. pathetic/like a bitch, or 2. you care/love your mother or girlfriend
However, I speak and/or act like a complete/reasonable adult, but will also act as if my mum/girlfriend/wife's decision is final. In such situation, it is very likely the other person will also have been in such scenarios before, and won't try too much more because they too know how pitiful it is.
It's a scapegoat, but in a sense also shows you respect their decision. It's much easier over the phone as you can just pretend to be shackled to their decision.
Sometimes they even ask to speak to my mum. I tell them she doesn't speak English, which further overrides any potential resistance. However it depends on what you're after. Sometimes you really just want to switch services but you don't want to tell them it's shit, you pull your mum into the equation to even up the score lol
For me, if I'm in a store with my mum, we speak Cantonese, so they have zero idea what we're saying anyway, so I can make it out to be more serious, and as you know, asians talking normally can sound like a big arguement.
EDIT: in all cases, be mature and assertive, and they'll know you're not kidding around. Again, extra credit for "I would love to stay, but she wants to change and it's her house/money...." for example. I could care little for what they'll think of me, but as long as you don't sound rude or like a child, I doubt they'll care as much
Thats almost exactly how I got about 400 dollars knocked off a nice mattress last year. Took lady friend in with me, acted interested, had her act like it was too much, walk away for a long discussion, come back and they have like some crazy ass deal to try to keep us in there. Worked.
My step-mom told me about some experiment some kid did with microwaving water and feeding it to plants which consequently led to their death ten days later as opposed to "regular" water. She mentioned that the microwave changes the DNA structure of the water (she even seemed skeptical at this point) and I just give her this look of utter confusion. Naturally this is a case of Bad Science. Thankfully she's much more malleable to changing her views but that comes at the cost of a double edge sword (same reason why she believed it in the first place).
Why the hell is there even a webpage devoted to debunking that?
Holy shit. We need better public education and we need it fas... 40 years ago.
Holy Hell, I had an argument with someone who posted that stupid ass story on facebook not too long ago. It came from some post of a girl doing the experiment and I pointed out that the experiment wasn't done correctly and the results were a false positive. Not only that, but there were links I provided from others who did a more controlled test with results that debunked the claim about microwaved water, yet she still argued it to be the truth and she supposedly no longer uses her microwave because it will "change the DNA" of her food.
Microwaved water will definitely kill your plants if you don't let it cool down.
My paycheck bounced, fucked on rent.
Depending on how this plays out, may be a third world problem...
only thing worse than that is having payroll glitch, then bouncing rent, electric bill, and fucking child support. been there, done that.
