Random Fail: First World Problems

I had moderate astigmatism which was corrected when I had LASIK. Depending on the type of astigmatism you have it may be an option, if you hate the glasses enough.

The doctor said two things to me. First he said my astigmatism was so severe I have to get the hi-index lenses otherwise my lenses would be super thick and wouldn't fit most frames and second the surface of my corneas are irregular either from birth or due to a degenerative condition which I have to go back in two weeks to test for so LASIK wouldn't work for me.

Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement. I am sad that even with insurance the lenses for my glasses cost about $230 alone. I really hope I don't have the degenerative corneal thinning thing. It could possibly lead to the necessity for a corneal transplant if I do and my corneas continue to thin. He is going to test their thickness in two weeks, they could just be bumpy.

@arus the frames I picked out I really liked they were comfortable and light they are rectangular lenses but rounded at the corners and the frame is titanium light thin and gunmetal grey. They fit my face nicely I think. Made by Oakley which is weird because I hate their sunglasses they have never fit me properly before.

Yeah I might need to get contacts I find out in two weeks. It all depends on how irregularly shaped the surface of my cornea is which is a separate issue from the astigmatism. The only way to fix that is contacts or a corneal transplant.

Thanks. I am more worried that my corneas are thinning from a degenerative condition than the astigmatism right now. That road can lead to some possibly scary stuff. The astigmatism probably won't get any worse than it is right now the doc said.

So weird how I feel like I can see fine but i get bad eye fatigue and headaches sometimes but when the doctor showed me what I could see with the temporary glasses I was blown away. Stuff for me is not blurry as much as I see ghosting and halo's around everything and the glasses got rid of that.

As a full-time glasses wearer I can say that I don't even notice them anymore. I have to get pretty thick lenses too (or of course the kind you're getting so they're not quite as thick). I used to like contacts but they would dry out my eyes pretty bad or shift a bit to where it was uncomfortable and I'd have to take them out. It's a lot more expensive to have both too, so now I just stick to glasses. Contacts really are great for certain things though if you don't want a visible frame around your eyes, for watching movies or sightseeing for example.

I wore glasses for most of my life. I only got contacts recently. I don't miss the dorky glasses I wore for most of my childhood.

Don't feel bad about not being a candidate for Lasik. I went for a consultation about two months ago and when they put in the numbing drops in order to dilate my eyes, I passed out on the chair. Apparently I'm allergic. They have other ways to numb you up for it but I'd rather not take that chance. Also, it's $4000 and that's kind of a lot of money when I'm about to be 33 and I've got maybe a decade before I start needing bifocals anyway.

Besides, my boyfriend says my glasses are hot, so they don't bother me too much.

I'm surprised your astigmatism was that bad and you're just now getting glasses though. You'll probably notice a huge difference when you get the glasses. Getting new glasses after your prescription has changed a lot is such a quality of life improvement.

Not to be a debby downer, but don't have expectations of your vision correcting. They will probably just prevent things from getting worse.

With that said, I have terribad astigmatism like you. I have to spend a fuckton on lenses for glasses because I basically have to get the "thinnest" possible which are still really thick. I usually switch back and forth between them and contacts because I hate both and will wear one until I am sick of it then switch to the other. XD

They really aren't bad, just I hate getting eyelashes in my eye with my contacts in, alternatively I hate how ugly glasses look on me.

I've done away with my glasses 99% of the time for the past few years. Once you get into the habit with contacts, it's pretty much automatic. Some mornings I'm half asleep still popping them in and don't even remember putting them on haha.

Im religious about washing my hands before taking my contacts out / putting them in, but other than hand washing them I'm to the point I can throw them in as soon as I wake up, not a big deal unless you got dry eyes issues

You can still feel it...it's there, but damned if you can find it. This has only happened to me twice in 15 years of wearing contacts but both times terrified me.

This happens to me maybe 4-5 times a year.

What's the worst is if it rips/folds in half while in your eye. Once I had to lay down and have my sister take it out because of this. @.@;

Shortly after switching to contacts, I went to see the Matrix at the theater. One of them randomly popped out 10 minutes into the movie. Watched the rest of it with that eye shut. Found the lens on the floor when the lights came up. Took it back to the car where I had an extra case/solution, cleaned it, put it back and and went on my way.

Also, one time I was on the onramp to I-75, looked over my left shoulder at what I was merging into. I didn't know the visor was cracked open, but apparently turning my head made it open more. The wind came in and blew the contact out of my left eye. Made my ass clamp down on the seat so hard. Was doing about 90 at the time.

Contacts can be a pain in the ass, but it's worth the hassle to actually have peripheral vision. Maybe it's not so bad with weak prescriptions, but I'm something like 20:300, and glasses narrow my field of view really badly, while contacts don't.

Doesn't everyone know this?
