I can personally envision about a hundred negative scenarios for every positive scenario for you having a gun in the house. The likelihood of you harming someone in an ambiguous situation, or the gun escalating an otherwise not life threatening situation, the chance that your son might come into the room and be mistaken for someone else (especially as he gets older), the chance that your son might find the gun while you are sleeping, or when you are out of the house....
I know the gun is there to provide you with a sense of security and control, and it is awful to live in fear, but, I would try seeking those things outside of such a dangerous object.
