yeah, they may not know the kid's doing it. bring a bowl with you for show-and-tell and be polite, explain how you think that shit got there. don't point out how hurt you could have been; that's fucking retarded and would just make you come across as a selfish whiny bitch. just say something like "i just wanted to let you know" or something. if they cant figure out how to stop it, suggest they zip tie some chicken wire or something across the gaps in the railing uprights.

(Just for those concerned, the gun was held in a way that it was not visible from the outside when I opened the door.) No one was out there but I brought my bike inside. There really is no fucking room for it in here but I'll be damned if some punkasses are going to steal it.
You seem like you have experience in an industry that might use guns, and I'll be upfront about my lack of specific facts...... but might having a loaded gun near you at all times when you are in a constant state of anxiety be a bad thing? Especially when you have a young child (boy? if that makes any difference) in the house.

I can personally envision about a hundred negative scenarios for every positive scenario for you having a gun in the house. The likelihood of you harming someone in an ambiguous situation, or the gun escalating an otherwise not life threatening situation, the chance that your son might come into the room and be mistaken for someone else (especially as he gets older), the chance that your son might find the gun while you are sleeping, or when you are out of the house....

I know the gun is there to provide you with a sense of security and control, and it is awful to live in fear, but, I would try seeking those things outside of such a dangerous object.

Can't judge someone until you walk a mile in their shoes. She lives alone, in a bad area, with a young child. Makes absolute perfect sense to me that she owns a gun and keeps it close at night.

Even now, this bitch hanging out in my office asking stupid shit like is my stamina any good!? I've been very blunt with them that I'm married but they don't get the picture, and I don't wanna do some gay shit like take it up with the boss.

My kids don't live with me so that's not an issue. Even so, they're 9 and 8 and they know better than to fuck around with guns. I made sure of that.

If nothing else, having the gun on me when I open the door late at night, as it was past midnight, is what gave me the courage to open up the door in the first damn place. I was in the military, but I got out ten years ago and I am not as strong as I used to be and I doubt I could defend myself against one attacker, let alone many.

I was lucky that there was no confrontation but I believe that had it come to one, the threat of a weapon would be enough for most to turn around and gtfo. I am also well aware of the legalities of justifiable use of deadly force, so I wouldn't pull that trigger unless I was truly sure that there was a threat of grievous bodily harm (which does, for the record, include rape). A bike theft? Not justifiable for me to use force, however it is not illegal to open the door with a weapon in hand, especially since it wasn't even visible, and wouldn't have been unless it was necessary.

I keep the gun loaded at all times because if/when something happens where I will need it, I will not want to fuck around with loading. If the time comes that I have my family living with me or I end up with small children in the house again, I will explore other storage solutions.

Trust me, I've done my research when it comes to owning a gun and being responsible. I wasn't about to step any further than my doorway and go hunting people down a la Zimmerman. If there was a verbal confrontation and they agreed to leave, the only thing I would need to do is shut my door and lock it, and that would have been the end of it. If there had been any sort of physical altercation, I would have had the means to defend myself. I'm not going to take the chance of being unarmed when I may need it. That's just stupid.

I actually grew up in a terrible area with a heavy 'gang'-esque presence. Windows broken a few times in my childhood, stuff stolen, myself or siblings beat up, older brother got stabbed (although in fairness he 'got involved' with them, which was just asking for trouble).

I also can see why she would want the gun, and I'm not hyper-critical of her having it. Instead, I'm getting at the very real issue of someone who is in a constant state of anxiety having a lethal weapon in a dangerous environment with young children around the house.

Specific to her story: What if those guys were stealing her bike? What would have her going out with a gun accomplished? Would they have just walked away into the night? Might they have had weapons on them too, and now we're in a war zone. Or perhaps, more optimistically they run away. But they know where you live and young men are going to be young men, and might then come back a few hours later either with their own weapons, or just to fuck with the house etc.

The gun provides some warped sense of protection that in reality is just a fallacy. It also brings into the house a very high risk situation that otherwise wouldn't be there. E.g. Your son cant find a gun in the house if its not there.

My father had a shot gun for the farm (although we lived in town). He thought he hid it well, but I had found it like 4 times by the age of 8. He also kept it unloaded but it was obvious where he kept the shells.

Kids will find these things, and you run the risk of grievous harm for a fallacy of protection that could otherwise be gotten from other avenues.

This may be a cultural thing, as the US is very gun-centric but ultimately, objectively you cant argue with the fact that with the gun in the house you are upping the risk of harm than if the gun wasn't there.

    You guys need to read.

My kids don't live with me. Any arguments against my owning a gun that have to do with my children are completely unrelated to my situation. Even so, my kids aren't as young as you guys seem to think.

I really didn't want to start a huge gun debate, and I'm not going to debate for/against owning one. We have poopdeck for that. Would I run after someone with a gun? Would I randomly threaten people who knock on my door? No. If someone wants to steal my property (and this includes my vehicle) and/or break into my apartment then yes I am going to make them think twice about it. If they wish to respond in kind by brandishing a weapon of their own, I will not hesitate to knock them on their ass with a bullet. I really don't give a fuck if some shithead dies doing something that makes him, by definition, a shitbag.

I really was posting initially to bitch about the fact that my once good neighborhood went to complete shit and I can't move until my lease is up this summer.

Not sure. I'd have to check my lease. Probably more hassle than it's worth for the three more months I have on my lease.

I don't blame you one bit for protecting your home. I have a firearm that stays in my home as well, 12 Gauge Pump. Mounted right to the underside of my bed. I use a small pistol safe with biometric (fingerprint) lock for the 3-5 shells (home defense rounds) I'd need to load. It works out great as it fits vertically in my nightstand drawer. Just pop the drawer open, insert hand into the reader, pops right open. My dogs give me plenty of time heads up to where anyone breaking into my house would be met with the business end of the barrel.

I've never had to even come close to using it in my current home. The apartment we were in for a brief time while we were buying our home was another story though. Had 1 attempted break in there in the 3 months we were living there. No clue whether is was the sound of the shotgun chambering or the dogs barking, but they only got through the screen door and the glass on the back door and took off.

    Aks,

My response to Brill's message came before I saw your response. I couldn't see your response so please forgive me if it seems like I was responding to your second post.

I still disagree with you having a loaded gun on you at all times, but, I respect it.

Based on what you've said, you have certainly thought it through and you are well experienced by being ex-military. Having lived in awful areas, and still do (hi2uAngel the drug dealer that operates on my stoop) I have a minor understanding (things are different being a single mother rather than a young male) of what it must be like for you.

And I agree, you came on to have a rant, not to have a gun debate.

My random rant: being at work on St. Patricks Day. Every one of my friends and family are celebrating and spamming snapchats, and facebook with pictures of how much fun they are having.

While I'm in an office, at a job that I hate and that I recently quit.
