Random Fail: First World Problems

So, as I posted in the fuck ya thread, I won a $100 gift card to the disney store. I was going to let my daughter pick out a bunch of stuff for her bday at the store outside disneyland. The prize was like the grand prize from a bunch of contests. The other ones gave out $25 gift cards. Got my card in the mail finally on friday...yep...$25...emailed the website with pictures n' such to say they gave me the wrong prize. Got an email yesterday saying someone from their prize department would contact me...waiting on that. Sucks because I am sure things will get sorted out, but her bday is on the 28th, so we are going to disney on the 27th. It took awhile for the card to get here, so if they get this sorted out I may or may not get it in time.

Not the end of the world, we can still use it, but it would be really nice for her to have fun about gifts while she's actually there. Plus, the disney sore outside disneyland is fucking monstrous compared to the ones in the malls, so more choices for her.

Just an update, the prize department did contact me and were like "it could take up to four weeks," but I actually got it in the mail today so I am all set. weeeeeeee

My CC keeps getting stolen. The second time in 2 months. Thank the lord helix no money was lost but this is a pain in the ass. I don't use it all too often and I have no idea if it got stolen at the same place or just unrelated. Or if it was stolen online (most of my online shopping is paypal/amazon). Anyone have any tips/advice?

Don't ever, ever, EVER use those little swipe machines that some vendors have attached to their smartphones. You are just asking to get your card stolen if you ever do this.

Never used that. I only had this card for 2 months since it last got stolen. I think it's the deli near my job since I started going there only the last few months. They have an old fashioned machine.

I just want to know if its worth figuring out where the place is since it's such a short time frame.

When you say stolen do you mean physically or buying things you didn't buy yourself?

Maybe about 5 years ago, my bank account was 'hijacked' you could say. Someone deposited around £10 into it. The next day my savings (like £2k) were practically cleared out by someone. I was pretty much in a panic. Luckily the money was refunded but I was never told how they did it. The bank switched my account to a special one where any suspect trades were questioned. I remember going to London for a Chuck convention and they rang me up confirming I was the one paying for the hotel. Do they have accounts like that in the US?

If you report identity or credit card theft you're accounts usually are treated just as you described.

Some credit cards will ask you to call anyways to confirm the transaction if something looks odd. I had someone try and use my checking account number to try and rent a hotel room in Michigan. The bank called me to confirm if it was me. It obviously wasn't, so they declined the charge and then told me they'd be monitoring my account more closely for identity theft/fraud for the next 30 days.

Bank of America locks me out of my own account all the time if they think something I'm doing is shady. I go to Mexico usually annually, and always forget to call them first to let them know, so I get a text alert letting me know it's been locked. They've also done it when I've made online purchases. Kind of a hassle but appreciated.

I have been locked out of my account on several occasions because I didn't respond to their auto-alert "press one if this is really you" phone calls when out of town. The crazy thing is, I got locked out when I went to Seattle a couple months ago. Seattle is 3 hours from here and a regular trip for me. When I went to Mumbai via Amsterdam, I used my card at both airports, a few local shops in India and again at the airports on the return trip. They never even blinked at that. Weird flagging algorithms or something.

Today is the anniversary of one of the worst days of my life, and I have some wonderful friends and family members that decided to check up on me today to see how i'm doing (I really do appreciate it).

Just not starting at 6 am in the morning, my friends are nice but they sure aren't bright lol

The only problem I have with some of the month to month places around here is that a lot of them don't auto-debit from my account, and I'm fucking forgetful as shit. I was with metroPCS for a while but I would never pay them on time and they'd shut me down almost immediately, which got really annoying. Not sure if that's changed though.

I got a flier from T-Mobile the other day which advertised a $60 rate, unsure how much more it would cost me with international, which is where a lot of my cost goes, honestly, but I need to be able to call Mexico. I'm gonna do some shopping tomorrow after work though.

Just saw this. fwiw, I fucking love t-mo. I've been with them for over ten years now, so they tend to be extra nice to me. I am a sucker for good customer service, and I love theirs. I do know they have special international plans for calling Mexico, so if you do want to go with them, as them about that.

Do you use the card to pay for gas at all? Gas pumps are one of the most common points of compromise for debit/credit cards.

I had this once. I was at a gas station a few miles down from my house, and they freeze my CC. Called my cell within 30 seconds asking if I was the one trying to use my card at a pump. I replied 'yes', and they responded: "well.... we're gonna cancel it anyways. Just to be safe"

It's not said nearly often enough but you and all of your brothers certainly have my gratitude. Boston really came together as a city and watching the BPD (from afar) work together to bring these guys in was incredibly heartening, for lack of a better word.

Certainly praying that you - or none elsewhere - ever have to go through that again.

The marathon itself isn't bad for me, I was tucked away in a command truck and saw nothing in person only through cameras. Now watertown, that's a rough anniversary. Hands down the worst day of my life

As for the friends checking up on me at 6 am, guess I was just a grump this morning. I never like having someone pound on my door at 6 am to say hi lol
