I have to depend on my Department Head to run things when I'm not there but she is proving to be totally incapable. I started under her and advanced rapidly, we've been hitting bars and seeing movies together for years now but nothing intimate, I'm not completely irresponsible. She has become a liability though, plenty of mistakes but over the weekend she missed a 240 unit order.

I've put myself in a bad place.

Being that this is a friend, anyone with management experience can relate a course of action?

My folkers already told me I fucked up, so that much I know.

Broke it off with my girl last night. Completely unsure how I feel about it. A real mixed bag, for sure. Wish I had someone around here to do something stupid with, but been too focused on finding work/working to start much of a social life.

You are the poster child for why you keep your work and social life separate. Reprimand and/or shit can! Its tough, but you can blame yourself for that lol. I just had to fire one of my best friends, who was my Shipping/Receiving Manager. Didn't feel too bad as he was basically just waiting to get the call for the Police Academy. I also knew what I was getting into before I hired him lol.

When someone effects your work reputation negatively, you deal with it ASAP. A shitty work friendship isn't going to pay your bills.

Complain to the supervisor. Explaining some of the more intricate parts of Excel or your inventory program software, etc is one thing. Teaching someone how to use Firefox and send a friggin' email is ridiculous.

You are the one training her? If so, don't you have some say in the decision to keep or replace? With my company, the work we do is pretty physical and requires the competent use of power tools(chop saw, table saw and pneumatic staplers) and a tape measure. We know within 30 minutes of hiring them whether they are competent or not. I do not hesitate to tell them when they are found to be lacking skills that they claimed they had and, if necessary, let them go. It seems that your new hire needs to have a conversation with someone like me or move on down the road.

Last month i had a full class (6 folks) 5 White-British 1 Pakistani-British. The way it works is a series of tests, if you fail on any part its a fail overall. So i do my thing, introduce myself etc.. Hand out the papers, say my piece, start the watch and look for a seat.

So i go to take a seat, and it just so happens i cant see the stop watch because of the light in this position, so i move to another vacant chair on the side of the room, i didn't move the chair because it could have nudged someones desk during the exam. This new chair, by coincidence is closest to the Pakistani fellow. Times up, i say we are having a break yada yada

Mark the test, 5 passed, 1 failed, the non-white guy. So as we do, I Deliver feedback to the guy, he seems upset, but generally ok in his attitude, felt genuinely sorry for the guy, but I'm there to do a job, gotta stick to the standards.

Fast forward to today and he has contacted my superiors, the governing body of the exams and other operators to complain about me and my apparent discrimination. By sitting closest to him it was a ploy of intimidation, i (apparently) never took my eyes off him for the duration and treat the other folks there better that day.

Little worried as I've only been in the job since October.. But i can't see how he would have a case, as everyone has the same papers and it is set to the same times. Luckily we keep all hard copies for a while too. Just hoping this ain't a stumbling block for me, mostly because of a different chair...

"Training" sounds too formal for what we're doing: We're a three-person team that was only two-person since the start of 2014 and we're trying to bring her up to speed. Here's how we do this, here's how we do that. The trouble is that when something goes wrong (we're in a computer-based classroom environment) we need to be able to respond immediately to the problem. If I tell someone to hit Alt-F4 on a keyboard, I expect them to know where those fucking keys are. We're mandated to see her through for more than a week before calling for her head, but shit. Gotta love contracting.

I wouldn't worry about it. Explain it to them as you explained it here. I don't know who you work for but I guarantee you they've dealt with something like this before.

Rarely get thunderstorms where I live, but our winters in last couple years has knocked out power a few times. Couple of times it took 5+hours to come back.

Invested in an UPS for the PC and a battery to charge mobile devices. They've gotten very popular in recent years and lots of different makes and models now, but I suggest this one.
