I have jury duty next week. Thankfully the worst case scenario for me is I have to show up Thursday or Friday and miss some Steam flash sales.

Seriously fuck Jury Duty. I got a summons myself but since I'm on Workman's comp was able to delay it until November.

What I don't get is how I lived in Florida my whole life and as an adult from 18-22 , Michigan for five years and not one summons from either.
Move to California and get a summons every fucking year since 2009. At least with my current job I get paid but being forced to take a day off for it sucked.

This is the first summons I've ever received. First one in 17 years since I turned 18 so I can't complain too much. It's common pleas so at least I stand the chance of getting a fairly decent case if my group is selected. I have to call them the day before to see if my group needs to report. Still just an all around shit ass day.

I lived in Pittsburgh all of two months and never changed my address with the state, but I got a jury duty summons from the city of Pittsburgh about two years after I moved from Pittsburgh to Florida.

Never had another summons before or after that.

The primary source for pulling names for the CA jury duty pool is from DMV records.

Yeah I only have an ID currently but I had a license in Michigan, Florida , Idaho and WA state and only ever have gotten jury duty here in CA. Just find it amusing of all places I've lived only CA has sent me one. And every fucking year at that.

in PA I believe Jury Duty is tied to registered voters, if you don't register you don't get summoned I believe is what everyone young goes by here as their reason for not voting.

This is probably a pretty dumb question but what makes jury duty so bad besides taking up some time? Is it honestly worse than working? (My boss has been off 2 weeks for it actually, and he has vacation so I haven't seen him in like a month...). I've never done it or even have the faintest idea of how it works in reality.

Basically if you get selected as a juror, the money they will pay you is so much less than what you'd make at your job, and for a lot of people, they can't just take sick/personal/vacation time (or don't have it available) to make a pittance in comparison when they have bills to pay.

And thanks to the previously mentioned blockaded roads due to Obama, my 15 min ride home took over an hour and a half. They had given the route days before and stated that they would allow cross-traffic so folks could plan ahead. Every route I had planned was blocked with no cross-traffic allowed....I actually ended back by my work and by the time I got back near the blockaded route, it was open again anyways.

There's tons of good reasons to not want to be a juror, and lots of them aren't financially-related. The risk of getting sequestered and not being able to see family/friends is always there, and there are some people that are morally opposed to being responsible for determining someone's fate. Those are just a couple off the top of my head.

So much this. I don't have anything but customer service/retail experience so I do what I have to survive - meaning working 2-3 jobs when necessary. In the past these jobs don't give any time off benefits unfortunately or Jury Duty pay outside of $25 bucks a day if that. It's also a drain on resources as the courts are not always close by and as I don't currently drive public transit or friends are my options.

I too agree with this. It's such a flawed system..of many unfortunately.

Every job I've ever had included a policy that allowed for time off without penalty as long as you provided a copy of the jury summons. Of course, they woudn't pay you for the days you missed, but they couldn't discipline you over it or fire you. The one time I got called for duty, I ended up getting out of it because I actually knew the defendant. Went to high school with him and was on the track team with him. Hooray for small towns, I guess.

I think my job pays for it; last time I was summoned a few years ago I was still a temp/contract employee without benefits and nice things but I'm full time now and its in our ADP drop down selections for time entry so I'm pretty sure we're covered for it.

I don't know how often US Presidents visit Worcester, but I would think its a big deal. I think its also the only HS ceremony he's speaking at.
