When I went to Cuba 2 yrs ago, our flight was supposed to leave at 10am, wound up leaving at like 9pm because a bird hit the nose of the plane and it had like a 2 foot dent, so they had to ship a part from Toronto (or so they said).

Cool story time:
I had a '98 f-150 last year that had a weird ticking sound. I took it to a mechanic because I was too busy to deal with it at the time. They said they pulled the valve covers off and found broken metal chunks around the valves and metal shavings in the oil. Thus, they concluded, with that evidence alone, that I needed to spend $7000 on a new engine and another $5000 on a transmission (how could they have diagnosed a transmission from the valve covers?). I promptly told them to rob someone else because it wasn't happening to me. I drove the truck home, metal shavings and all and had my bro-in-law help me pull the engine apart. 5 minutes into it, we had the passenger side valve cover off and he reached in and grabbed the timing chain. He could lift it off the sprocket and rotate it to the next tooth. $200 later, I had a new timing chain kit and clean oil.

The metal chunks/shavings turned out to be pieces of the tensioner spring. When we went back to the mechanic to show them what they clearly missed, we got an admission that they never even looked at the truck beyond opening the oil filler cap and seeing metal in the oil. The tech that was supposed to look at it had a heart attack while looking at the oil and was shipped off to the hospital. They gave me the bullshit story to try to charge me for 4.5 hours of diagnostics. Needless to say, I got a full refund and a $100 gift card for my troubles.

The moral of the story: Mechanic shops, even dealer endorsed mechanic shops, are still crooked as hell and I will continue to do repairs myself as I have done for the last 15 years.

I dont think the belt fully snapped on mine, they are telling me the drive shaft belt frayed, the cover broke and there's all kinds of rubber in there where the timing belt is. I dont really know shit about cars so I'm at their mercy but the garage is a pretty credible one. He's saying they wont know about the valves until timing belt is replaced.

I dont really know shit about cars so I'm at their mercy but the garage is a pretty credible one. He's saying they wont know about the valves until timing belt is replaced.

In the worst case, you may be able to remill the heads if you can find a metal shop. Had to do that for my old Outback cause my dad decided he wanted to have it done for me before I got up and messed up the timing.

Anyway, depending on if you know anyone, it may not mean you need to buy a whole new engine.

I can't tell you how many people I have to give pricing to my Lexus and Acura customers for timing belts and declined saying they would go elsewhere and get it done later. Later never comes and shit like this can happen. Then obviously it's our fault. Yeah car maintenance isn't fucking cheap but it's worth it for the life of your vehicle yet so many when buying a car only think of the here and now not the long run.

I'm also thankful that most newer cars now do have the timing chain so it's not something you should have to worry about.

It's common for that to happen to be honest. As soon as there is metal in the oil and chattering, the diagnose is always engine internals, which is 99 times out of 100 leads to a new engine. The problem with this, is once the person finds out they need a new engine or a new car.... the collateral for payment is now worthless to the owner lol. They'll just leave the fucked up car there and not pay the diagnostic bill.

Them charging you for 4.5 hours worth of diagnostics when they only basically checked the oil IS bullshit. Shops like that are all too common now a days.

I would have done the same thing they did, but told you exactly what I did and why I came to that conclusion. Then charged you for the hour it took. hen if you'd like me to open the valve cover and diagnose further, it will cost you X more in labor hours.


I'm no mechanic by trade though, I just do it on the weekends for friends and because I like cars. That's probably why I'm honest and most are not lol.
