pretty much bombed a job interview today. Can possibly save it by doing a write up requested by the dean that I have no fucking idea how to do.

He laid some real truth on me that the reason why I have a hard time getting a job is because my English degree was back in 2002.

I have until June of 2017 to get a job or my cert expires.

It may be time to finally throw in the towel and I hate that. Hate it hate it hate it. I know I am a good teacher, no matter what anyone thinks if they could just see me with the kids. But the market is still so fucking saturated.

I have no idea what I would do with my life if I wasn't teaching. This is my dream and I overcame so many obstacles to get there and now I have this huge wall in front of me that I can't seem to budge. So much time and effort to get here. I can honestly say there is not much else I can think of that I would be happy doing. Really at a loss right now.

    I need a teddy bear.

Was about to have sexy time with the GF. Suddenly the entire room starts shacking horribly for me. Like my head stayed still but someone picked up the room and shook it violently. Became horribly nauseous.

Spend the entire night in the ER for a "We dunno" diagnosis and sent home.

Please don't tell me the reason you're not working/haven't held a job is because you got preggo.

No. The children have nothing to do with it.

I got my undergrad in 2002, moved to Cali in 2006, went back to school in 2011 (when we could afford to). Had the first kid while at school and only two took weeks maternity leave so I could finish my cert without any pause.

Worked as a writing instructor until we had to move locations and the pay would have been less than the cost of gas to get there. Then went back to substitute teaching because everyone and their mother told me the way to get a teaching job is to sub. Had my kid, and only took two months off from subbing (well then worked one month then summer vacation).

I drive down to SD every other week to substitute while the in-laws watch the kids. So I am working.

Subbing doesn't count towards getting my certification permanent.

Pretty much none of my life story would have changed without the kids, outside of getting to probably sub every week instead of every other week.

And I'd much rather do that with having the kids, than not have them. They are everything to me.

Honestly, from what little I know about you (and it's very little), your husband job sucks for what you want to do. The state sucks unless you were grandfathered in ages ago, but afaik your husband needs to stay out west for his career. This is why I'm trying to do what I'm doing; in the medical field I can go anywhere with even if the pay is better in some places then others. My girlfriends teaching career isn't as lucky though, and if we want to move anywhere out of state it'll be a pita for her to find a job.

Have you considered trying to go for your masters and doing something related to leadership? My gf wants to eventually pursue higher education, so once she's made some connections and gained experience (and paid off some debt), shes gonna take a break and try to get the education to become a principal or something bigger. It's something that might better for you and your family in the long run.

Now that I think about it, that's exactly what my aunt did too. She taught for a short while, then continued her education and got into leadership. She's making some big bucks in NY now cause of it.

I think in Cali administration is a whole other degree.

I have thought about going into special education. It was something I don't mind doing, but it wasn't ideal. The pro to special ed is you are pretty much guaranteed a job. The con to special ed is that is the only thing you will ever get to do. No one would hire a English teacher when they can have you do special ed instead. And I guess I am always worried about being trapped in that area if I end up not liking it.

I think I psych myself out about that though as I have spent a lot of time with students with special needs I really don't think I wouldn't like it. The IEP stuff gets kinda out of control though.

But ya, my husband's field is basically LA, SD or bust. He's been trying to get back down to the SD area so we wouldn't have to pay for daycare, but no luck. LA with daycare would be doable if we were both working though, just would be a bonus (plus we really hate LA).

I know this sounds stupid, but I feel I am getting to old for this shit. I am 34. I don't want to be spending my whole life trying to get an education for a job I may never get. But I want to teach so badly. So so badly you don't even know.

You look into private or Catholic schools? down here they pay less but also come with a lot less stress.

Catholic schools have extremely restrictive rules for teachers. My best friend from high school works at our old school (yes, get your laughs in, Aks went to a Catholic school) and she said she is not allowed to cohabit, have premarital sex (not that they'd know, but if they found out ...), be on birth control, get pregnant if not married, have an abortion, have tattoos, and a whole bunch of other things I can't remember, all while getting paid significantly less.

Basically, there's a reason why nuns teach at those places and they have a harder time finding teachers.

I apply everyday. There is a specific website that hosts all the employment opportunities. I wouldn't mind working at a catholic school.

The school I just interviewed said the job would be $30,000 lol...

Florida has passed a lot of teacher salary laws lately. The county where I'm hoping to work (which is the one I live in, so it's just a thousand times more convenient) has a 40k starting salary for all public school teachers, minimum.

My friend up in PA, on the other hand, (the one who works at aforementioned Catholic school) is making about 26k. But hell, in PA that's actually not terrible. Cost of living up there is a lot cheaper than down here. I think it actually evens out.

30k in Cali is pitifully low though. Come to Florida Ksan, we still have Disney nearby and there are jobs.

Don't be fooled though, they gave teachers a small raise but turned around and took it right back from their pensions.

Her team mate was telling her she compared her check before and after the raise, and she's making a whooping 30 cents more.

Yeah, this was a charter school. Starting pay for public teachers here are around $42-$48. I had to think and think. You'll get this. He wanted me to write up a 4 year plan for 5th-8th over the weekend. Fucking 4 year plan. It would take days to write one UNIT plan. More I thought about it, it just isn't worth it even with my needs to get a job.

I would totally move to FL, fuck the haters. Hubby's parents even still have their house there. But there are no jobs for him anymore in FL.

Our careers aren't very compatible lol.

I have to try and figure out what I want to do so I can have a fucking career before I am 60.

As an aside, you hear anyone trying to praise charter schools as the way to go, just punch them in the balls for me.

In Florida, charter schools pay a little over 30k a year, but usually the principal doesn't have you teaching the fcat year round. They often give you a little more freedom.

Well that and the CoL is a lot lower in FL than here.

One year of that (obviously net with no bills) could buy you a house in many places in FL.

Can buy you a trashcan here.

Maybe the problem is your man. You tried making him change careers?
