Not saying this is how it happened, but it certainly is possible

How they got your card info is another thing all together I suppose.

How they got your card info is another thing all together I suppose.
That doesn't explain how they got the number and the expiration, but damn that is fascinating and nothing I'd ever considered.
I'm going to become super paranoid now. I might even go back to writing checks.
I hope I am never behind you in line at the grocery store.
They just take the check and scan it through now, you don't even have to fill it out.
If they were behind you, they could have easily taken a pic of your card without you knowing. Most people aren't careful with their cards at all. That IR thing is prevalent enough that I have seen two different people using it in a local convenience store in the last 6 months. When can we update to a system that is at least from this century?
We live in a day and age where if people are really adamant at getting your info, they'll find a way to do it. Skip to about 9 minutes into this video:
Canadian (and I think UK too) Debit/Credit cards have a chip in them:
(The silver square on the left). Those have to be inserted into the debit/credit machine when you make a purchase and if your card is used without that chip being inserted, most banks (mine definitely) just shut down the account immediately. There is the quick tap/tap-and-go on the right side too, and I think that's what the doode in the Ted talk video is referring to specifically.
I stopped using my debit completely like ~7 years ago, not worth the risk and I often wonder why so many seem to prefer it. Banks tend to be much more difficult to work with on charges, fraud response/prevention, recovery, and even just general use.
Credit card companies on the other hand are fantastic with this stuff. I had one of my cards flagged and locked <1min after a questionable purchase, and the company had a rep immediately call my home, cell phone, and e-mail to confirm it. All charges were immediately removed and I had a new card/number in 2 days, and all I had to do was answer a few questions on the phone with <5 minutes of my time.
Unless you don't have a credit card or have difficulty controlling your spending/remembering to pay bills, I don't see any reason to even use debit; less convenient, higher risks, not to mention no/less rewards or perks.
My bank has been great so far. I got my temporary replacement card and my new one should be waiting for me when I get back from my trip. When it comes to credit, I'm not a "pay as soon as you use it" type and so I tend not to use credit cards except for emergencies like the truck breaking down where I don't have the money on hand to pay out of pocket. Otherwise I will rack up tons in interest charges.
I did call the police and they said that if the bank wants to file a report they will, but since I'm not liable for the charges, I'm not the one upon whom the crime was committed. That seems backwards to me though because it was local, I know the addresses and I can give the cops the info to investigate tapes and whatnot, seems like it's kind of time-sensitive but they're not doing anything with it. My guess is these fuckers will get away clean, which, even though I am not financially responsible for it, still pisses me off. People shouldn't be able to get away with this kind of fucking bullshit. I'm apparently too idealistic for my own good though.
The store is the one who will need to file charges. They actually stole from the store, not the bank. The store is not paid by the bank in situations like these. The store is responsible for the loss in profits. The bank simply loses out on the transaction fee and manpower hours to deal with it.
We call them chip and pin cards in the UK. If they're used in person, they need a PIN to accompany the card payment, or you can use contactless without the PIN but only up to £15 a transaction.
Last year I had two separate cards compromised and had to be reissued because someone in Canada tried to buy something (a minor amount - testing the card) without the PIN. I received a phone call from my bank querying the transaction - it had already been declined but to be safe they canceled the cards.
Pretty much identical to how it is in Canada too. Albeit, I think the contactless payment method can go up as high as $100 depending on the individual's preference.
Doing some quick reading online, it seems most of the world is using the smart-chip cards and only the US is really behind. And it looks like the main reason why isn't because of banks or credit card companies, but mainly because of retailers themselves not making the upgrades to their payment machines. But it seems like that should be changing this coming fall.
I still can't fathom the idea of passing off my credit card at a restaurant for someone to take away for like 5 minutes to process a payment without me watching. With the chip+pin cards, you don't lose sight of your card ever. And while it's not 100% secure, it definitely is better than the system you guys got down there right now.
Edit: Chip+Pin cards in Canada are for both credit and debit cards, I should clarify
Not myself, but saw two fails yesterday.
1. The dress shit was on the fucking TV news. Fuck this planet.
2. While I was out doing groceries, I saw a dude in his work uniform get out of his car and head into his job. His car? An actual fucking itasha.
While there are a few places that do that (mainly gas stations), in the states that's very few and far between. In my town I only know of one gas station that does that.
I've yet to find any place that does around where I live, closest thing is just a minimum charge to use credit/debit. I can see how that would deter someone though of course.
This happened last year:
So we're replacing PC's at work. 200+ systems. We're storing them upstairs in an unused office. No big deal, out of everyones way.
Then our higher ups decide they want to use this space for our benefits fair. It is the only storage space that can hold all 200 computers while we wait for .... another fucking headache. It's the only place they can be stored.
The day before the benefits fair, I'm upstairs with a director and a maintenance lackey. Not my director, not the HR director, but another director who has no fucking business being involved in this stage of planning. This bimbo is a 30 year younger version of Delores Umbrage from the Harry potter universe.
Maint guy: Yeah, so we'll have these doors locked so and...
Bitch: *stopping him* Oh no, we need this room. It's where I want the massage people are going to set up.
Maint guy: Well, that room is storage and...
Me: ...we have no where else to store these. This is the only space onsite that is large enough to store these. There are 8 more rooms here that are unused.....
Bitch: *waving hand* I'll take care of that. Also, we're going to use all of them. *calls my director*
TL;not-typing-the-rest: Cuntface gets her way.
So being that we are understaffed, I had to move them. Right then.
So, I hurt my shoulder doing so and have been fighting workmans comp for 3 months now.
The easily most annoying part?
The power went out 10 minutes into the benefits fair the next day because someone hit the power lines down the street, taking it out for the rest of the day. Because of that useless waste of carbon I hurt my shoulder for NOTHING. Not the first time this has happened, she turns into a gigantic twat whenever she thinks someone is saying 'no' to her in any way.
just hit her.
