I find that I have to be really firm with people. If I try to be gentle or nice, I still get stepped all over. Unfortunately, that also gets me the "bitch" label, but it's almost impossible for me to be taken seriously if I don't act like a bitch.

I certainly don't yell, curse, or scream at people, but if I'm like super friendly they don't help me at all.

Just got off the phone with my bank, since my credit card keeps getting declined here in Chicago.

I guess I need to notify them every single time I leave my home state, in order to use my card.

Yeah, 2 of my cards have a chip now but almost none of the shops have the right readers yet. Makes life way easier when a place does though. Also makes traveling easier.

It's happening now, but it's not as easy as just saying "you need to do this." There are many reasons why it's only in the process of happening now, and there is plenty of blame to go around on both the issuers and the merchants.

Oh, I know the merchants are all "QQ a new terminal is too expensive". I'm pretty sure if the CC companies contacted all of the merchants and said "If you are found to have accepted a fraudulent card and do not have a chip/pin terminal, you will be billed for the charge", two things will happen:
1-the merchant says "fuck you, I just wont accept credit", which will drive customers away
2-the merchant will pony up the money for the terminal

I got a chip card recently. I've only found one card reader that looked like it actually took it so I shoved it in. Cashier gives me this incredulous look and was all "Uh, that's for WIC." (food stamps).

WIC isn't food stamps, lol. It's government assistance, yes, but not food stamps. I believe you can be on both at the same time. WIC is super strict and only lets you get certain items in certain quantities. Some cereals, cheeses, milk, etc. I was on it when my kids were babies and it basically helped with the staple foods.

It's a chicken and the egg situation. The merchants didn't/don't want to pay for new terminals because that can get expensive, especially for large retailers.

Issuers didn't want to issue the cards without terminals ready to go because chip cards are significantly more expensive. For a regular mag stripe card it costs somewhere around $0.50 for the blank plastic, for a chip card that cost will raise to somewhere around $3 - $4 per blank plastic depending on the chip used and bulk discounts.

The only way to really force the issue was to do what you said. Visa & MasterCard both announced that after October 1, 2015 (October 1, 2017 for pay at the pump gas stations) that merchants that don't have the ability to accept chip cards will be responsible for fraudulent transactions on accounts with chip cards. This has sped up the process, but it takes time to get everything setup and certified and tested and approved by multiple different companies and ready to go. I know this because I have been working for 2 years to get chip cards at the Credit Union where I work.

The whole thing is ridiculous, and that's a First World Problem.

I'm tired is my fail. On topic - I moved to San Diego a couple years back and honestly it took me a while to actually update my bank with my correct address. I am not sure if I should be worried or happy that they never really cared about where my transactions were going. Gas for days in a straight line from FL to CA and then some big purchases for furniture/things to get settled in.

I was at a bar the other night and I overheard a couple guys talking to the bartender. One of the guys mentioned he had a colonoscopy scheduled for April 15th. I can usually tell within the first 10 seconds of an interaction whether I will do the best I can to help somebody out, or if I will do the bare minimum necessary and be willing to say I can't do anything. If you approach me in a calm and friendly manner, doing your best to explain the issue, I will do whatever I can. But if some of the first words out of your mouth are a defensive "you guys screwed up" mentality, forget about it.

I work at a movie theatre, and it is amazing how many times people buy tickets online for the wrong location. Two different guests ask me why we can't retrieve their tickets. Their credit card doesn't pull up anything, and the confirmation number is not one of ours. I ask if they have the email which has more information. Upon presenting it, I see the problem and inform them that unfortunately it is not for our location. Guest A apologizes and asks if we are showing the same movie at a similar time they could buy tickets for. Guest B says thats stupid, its not their fault, and we should let them in anyway. Guess which one I will most likely pass in free of charge?

That being said, as long as you have all the facts, you shouldn't have to be firm to get what you need. Any paperwork supporting what you are asking for, in theory, should be enough. However, if all you can provide is "somebody told me X, but I don't have a name" or "I saw an ad somewhere, but I don't know where" and start raising your voice, expect them to get their backs up and not want to help.

Xantavia nailed it. When I worked tech support for DirecTV I would always hook up customers who were nice, calm, and understanding. Start off screaming gibberish? Yeah, you ain't gettin shit.
