On the serious side I'd be more concerned with the floor in the bathroom than the ceiling downstairs. A sheet of drywall is ridiculously easy to replace. Tearing up the tile/laminate/whatever you have on the floor because water got under it is not easy. It's time consuming and a colossal pain in the dick.

Yeah legitimately need to make him pay for it. Doesn't matter that you're married to his sister, or what the circumstances are. If she's an adult she'll understand and agree, if she isn't, she'll either get over it or you'll have a very long and annoying life ahead of you.

Don't let their parents pay. If what you describe is true, that's how the dude is like this in the first place. People keep cleaning up for him. Write something up in clear language that covers acknowledgement of what happened and agreement of a debt to be paid in amount of whatever the cost to fix it is. Sit him down and talk to him like an adult and have him sign it.

People like that, entitled and spoiled, won't receive a message that comes from you being angry at them or being guilted by parents. Just reinforces the "everyone is against me, it isn't my fault" attitude that kids like that tend to have.

Walked into the spare room around midnight last night and noticed a huge tear in the new cat litter bag. It spilled onto the carpet into a huge pile. Kitted thought it was a makeshift litter box so cleaning that at 1am was not fun.

Was at laundromat earlier and packed everything up and went home. Couldn't figure out where some clothes were so figured we just forgot to wash them somewhere in apartment. Wasn't until nearly 2 hours later it hit me we left laundry in a smaller washer. Just now went back and threw it in the dryer. I'm a fucking dumbass.

Welp. The damage was a lot worse than expected. Heavy amounts of water got into the hardwood floor and one or two seams are already showing signs of buckling. Water damage restoration personnel seemed stunned and concerned at the amount of water that practically poured down from the second floor. The drywall ceiling is an easy fix, but now I'm more concerned about my hardwood floor in a 2560sqft open concept kitchen/living room. I don't even care about the cost at this point, now I'm worried about long term issues on a home I just closed on barely over a month ago.

I bring this man into my home to help my wife's family who struggled to support him. He eats my food, he drinks my beer, he gets his first fucking job ever at a movie theater and his family applauds him as if he's 15. I'm done, I'm kicking him the fuck out. In my family, your worthless ass gets sent to DR. I don't think I've ever been this somberly angry without a fucking drink ready to go. Every instinct right now is telling me to hurt this man. He is the poster boy for Republican rhetoric on immigration and welfare. He is the fucking epitome of worthless. He is an individual who literally contributes absolutely nothing to society.

But yeah, while unemployment has cast me in that "dead weight" role in the eyes of some, I still do a whole hell of a lot of crap around the house here while generally handling my own messes (and not making them). Sorry, but there's just no "not noticing" a tub overflowing, let alone was probably a few dozen gallons by the sound of it all.

Agreed with this. The only time I've bathed out of my own home is when I stayed in a hotel with a whirlpool tub.

Hotels are fine. I try to make a point to have bath sex in every hotel I'm in. Apartment sized bathtubs just aren't big enough.

Trust what the water restoration guys say only as a gauge for how much money they want to make off of you. Seriously. Be very wary of their reactions and recommendations. The more they can tell you is fucked, the more they can charge. A minor issue with hardwood joints swelling becomes an entire floor replacement. Get someone to remove the water if you have not already done that. They will have vacuum equipment and dryers for it. After it is dry, assess the damage with someone you trust. With this being bath water, it is clean and easy to mitigate. Tearing open a few holes in the drywall below to inspect the flooring may not be a bad idea.

Houses are built with green lumber and are often left exposed to weather while being built. A little bit of water soaking into the flooring will not cause structural damage. Get angry at the kid, but don't let someone screw you because they see dollar signs from someone who knows nothing of home construction. Get your skeptical detective on!

Any way to tell if all that damage is recent? If you just bought it, I wonder if it was a known issue that the previous owner covered up and your brother-in-law's negligence was just enough to push it over the edge.

I'm echoing what Ace said. The water restoration people are going to say it horrendous. Because they want your money. Talk me through exactly what they're saying. Did the water go down the walls into the hardwood floor the floor beneath the bathroom?

Big thing to remember, water evaporates. Some of you may remember a few months ago the refrigerator in my game room leaked all along the baseboard and got under the floor tiles. Water was literally pooled up underneath to the point that if you stepped on a panel the water seeped up between the seams. I had a contractor buddy of mine come over. His exact words I don't remember. But he basically said that the water will dry up and to avoid walking on it in order to keep it from spreading further.

Get an industrial dehumidifier from Home Depot and turn that shit on. Once the water is gone, then take a look at what you've got. Don't make any rash decisions based on what the restoration people said.
