Becoming increasingly annoyed at the only other person in my research group who works way, way, way harder than me. Guy has his masters already in astronomy, has been working in relativity group with me for a year. I have 3 years of prior work in the field, but at an undergraduate level. Guy knows NOTHING about ANYTHING despite working on research for a minimum of like 4 hours every single day. Can't bounce basic ideas or concepts about the project off of him because I have to explain, in detail, every single fucking point of the question I'm asking. Wastes my fucking time to hell and back.
Spent like 30 minutes today watching his eyes glaze over as I explained horrendously basic fundamentals of the problem we both are working on (different aspects of it) that he should've learned within his first week of working on the project. No exceptions. He gave a student talk today in the department on research that is pretty close to what I work on and it was so horrible that both I and my adviser were cringing and shaking our heads almost constantly. A lot of shit he was saying was just flat-out incorrect. Thankfully, most people at the talk didn't know enough about GR to realize how wrong it was. Motherfucker didn't know even the basics of what separates our approach to the problem from what other groups do, and why it needs to be handled differently.
Sucks because he really does work very, very hard. Much harder than I'm willing to work for what they pay me. I do ~10-15 hours of research a week. He does like around 30. I always felt bad until recently because I've been funded by research grant since day 1 at LSU, whereas he is still on a TA in the third semester, despite him having more experience and a masters from MIT. I also just got a brand new $1800 laptop through my research grant this week and I'm not even sure I'm staying in the program past this year. This week has killed all my sympathy. I hadn't talked to him in a while so I was under the impression that surely with all his hard work I was now the one who looked bad and was slacking. Nah. I get done in a weekend what equates to a month or two of work from him.
So fucking frustrated. While his performance doesn't directly affect me, it does mean that instead of being able to work problems out with other grad students before pestering my adviser, something I don't like to do, I basically have to work 110% fucking solo. Dude also bugs my adviser for at least 2 hours a day M-F in a combo of in-person, phone calls, and emails. I feel bad asking more than like 1 email question a week.
Annoyed. Very annoyed.
