Random Fail: First World Problems

Cracked one of my molars (probably on all these now and laters ive been chomping on). Fortunately it cracked in a way that didn't expose any nerves so I should be able to just go on with life until I have patience / time to deal with it.

What is reasonable expectation pricewise to get a crown or cap or whatever they do for this shit?

Around $400-500, no insurance. Cracking a molar indicates a cavity, based on what my dentist told me when I had the same thing. I waited a month or two, and he said if I waited a couple more weeks he would have made more from the root canal.

Lame. Though $400-500 isn't the end of the world, but at holiday time with all the money I'm spending on travel it kinda is.

Oh well, I'll either survive until mid January or I wont.

If you don't have dental insurance, a lot of dental schools bring in patients so the students get hands-on work for lower cost.

Depending on how far back it is, why not just have it pulled? It's a lot cheaper and a lot less hassle.

I got a crown because mine busted apart more. Filling is like $80-100. Might want to go in a see what they can do to save it. I was pretty upset about it too, because I hadn't ever had a cavity until that. My insurance covered most of my crown so it was too big of a deal.

Extraction isn't much cheaper. If it's a bottom, the tooth above it doesn't react well from what I've heard/read.

Oh I had a tooth pulled for like $150 I think, a lot better than $500. I guess it depends where you go.

Also I've had to have a few teeth extracted over the years from fights and shit + wisdom teeth.

And like even $350 vs having a tooth or not for years and years is a pretty paltry sum of money imo.

Cracked molars suck but I lived with two for nearly 3 years without insurance. Like it's been said just be careful how you eat on it. I also second checking out dental schools if it's an option.

I've actually had a bottom molar on each side extracted and it was a tough choice but it definitely hasn't impacted things at all. It's definitely a last resort typically.

I had braces for 5 years as a kid and finally had nice straight teeth. Getting wisdom teeth out + losing two random teeth somewhere in the back (idr which, decade+ ago) fucked it all up annoyingly. Everything in the front still straight but my molars line up about as well as special needs kids play jenga.

If it's a tooth problem, deal with it asap. I managed to crack one of my wisdom teeth in half because of hitting it just right, and had to wait to deal with it b/c of scheduling, finals, etc. Final result was pulling all of my wisdom teeth and a permanent scar down the side of my tongue from cutting it so often on the broken tooth.

I used to hate going to the dentist, but my current one has figured out that shots don't work that well on me, so he just knocks me out w/ gas instead. Never remember the pain, feel great after... win/win.

do a consult with a dentist. should be relatively inexpensive, give you a better idea at what you're looking at. they'll be able to see your other teeth, too, and know whether it's worth saving this one. context being everything, it might not be worth it, because maybe its pair is on the verge of giving up, too, or maybe you have a spare or some shit idk.

a root canal, should that prove necessary, is really sort of last resort for a tooth you can't lose w/o your chewing being affected. i had 7 teeth pulled; 3 wisdom (4th never existed) and the 4 backmost molars. those 4 aren't really all that useful. sure, they help, but you don't really do all that much chewing with them. the next set of molars are the real MVPs; that's where you do most of your chewing. root canal/crown is worth it on those.
