I had moved to Texas and picked up a delivery parts job to keep a roof over my head. The particular route I was given was a 6-stop 10+ hour drive that I ferried ASAP car parts across multiple stores. This particular day after I had finished my normal shift my boss tells me there's a customer who ordered a large amount of expensive parts. I agree to stay a little late and even go into the warehouse to collect the parts myself. After carrying back a bunch of rotors and whatever else was needed I load up the vehicle. I make sure to carefully box parts that are fragile and then stow them safely behind the truck seat. My boss loads up a bunch of tires in the back of the truck and I look at the rotors. Not a lot of space in this small ford pickup so I place them in the passenger seat.
I do a quick oil check and follow the spreadsheet of the routine truck inspection before pulling out. It's required by my job but most people like to slack.
I hit up one of the most god awful roads to be on in Texas at 5:00 and basically sit at a crawl, only really keeping one foot on the brake and lifting/pressing it whenever traffic moves 2 feet. I'm listening to some song on the radio and staring ahead of me probably thinking about what I wanted to eat after this run when I see something moving VERY QUICKLY in my rear view mirror.
I look and see a white truck, Nissan Titan coming at me (Ford Explorer). I lose the grip on my steering wheel as I quickly looked around. To my left is a wall, to my right there's an open space but even if I tried to turn I would either hit the person in front of me or I would be stuck sideways since the lane next to it had 3 cars backed up.
So what else could I do? I watched silently as the truck slowly disappeared to the right side of the mirror and relaxed. Oh maybe he slowed down and will pull up ne--BAM! I swear what happened next took maybe 8 seconds but felt like 8 minutes of my life. I first saw the left side of my vehicle smash into the wall/ground? sending glass flying everywhere. But what terrified me next was what came flying at my face. The rotors. Heavy as they were I felt them whizz right past my nose sending a wave of relief and fear as I saw them smash through whatever remained of the window. What happened next was my vehicle rolled back the other direction and make what everyone who witnessed it say a '8-full rotation while spinning and landing in a crumpled mess on its tires, backwards' movement. What I can say is I felt the metal of the vehicle completely crumple around me. The tires that were in the back had flown everywhere, but mostly smashed the back of the window behind my head, shoving my seat forward. The driver's door pierced into my left side. The passenger's side? Gone. The seat was holding the remains of the door and the ceiling of the vehicle. The entire time this was happening, I had calmly thought 'what do I want my final thoughts to be of?' and I thought about how I probably should let some grudges go, thought about how if I die I would really hope to see my best friend on the other side who had just died to cancer, and some other sappy love stuff I won't bore you with.
When I finally stopped rolling I remember the front window was spidered completely and that there was a red tint all over it and the console and the steering wheel. I reached out to touch the steering wheel which looked sticky and realized it was blood. Freaked, I wondered who was bleeding and oh god, I hope it's not that family in front of me. Shit shit did someone die!? I tried to shove the door open but it was stuck GOOD. I then fumbled with my seatbelt which why the fuck was it not unlocking?! Once I managed to free myself from my seat I realized that the driver's side window was mostly gone so hell, why not crawl out. As I touched the window I realized for the first time that I have blood all over my arms and hands. Again, I'm worried about that family I saw in front of me so I crawl out quickly. I headplant on the ground which was not my intention but my body wasn't reacting properly to the situation and saw blood all over the road.
SHIT! I get to my feet and look around. The Nissan Titan is untouched in the ditch and I'm facing traffic. I can't find my glasses but I can see the expressions of everyone looking at me. They are horrified. One of them is frantic on his phone. Everyone puts their vehicles in park and climb out running towards me. I quickly walk around my truck, thinking the worst for what was in front of me. Nothing. Everyone's cars are fine, but people are getting out of their vehicles to look at me.
As I'm trying to puzzle together what happened a lady rushes to my side and tells me to lay down.
Her: Oh god, oh god, oh god!
Me: What's wrong?
Her: You need to lay down! Oh my god, did someone call 911?
Me: I'm fine.
As she's freaking out I see the guy who was on the phone run up and pulling his jacket and shirt off.
Him: I called 911, they are on their way.
Him: Miss you need to lay down!
Me: Huh?
He starts tearing his clothes into pieces and wrapping them around different parts of me. I see the woman crying and going hysterical.
As soon as I'm relaxed on the ground. PAIN. I started screaming and howling. There are so many people talking and my vision is blurring in and out I could barely make out what people were doing at this point.
Guy: Miss... you're bleeding from your head, your arms, your legs, I think your side is bleeding too. Your hands have glass. You need to remain still.
I'm screaming so many things in my head at this point.
Then the guy who hit me shows up with his girlfriend.
Him: Uh, so I don't think your lights were working.
Girlfriend: YOU BITCH! YOU SLAMMED YOUR BRAKES! I'M GOING TO SUE YOU! MY NECK HURTS! MY NEEEECK HURTS!
I assure you. Their Titan is unscratched. They are standing straight and the girl is waving her hands at my face.
Shirtless Guy: Look you guys need to back up. She needs air.
Girlfriend: FUCK HER! I'LL FUCKING SUE! YOU'LL GET YOURS BITCH! FUCK YOU!
Shirtless Guy: Step back.
Hysterical Woman: Ohhh goooddd.... Oh god... *starts reciting some prayer*
Nissan Driver: So uh... you're not going to press charges right?
I barely see the police officer (who arrives in miracle time) who is kneeling over me showing me his fingers asking me to count them. He starts asking me basic stuff. My name, where I live, what was I doing. I'm gritting my teeth through the pain trying to make a cohesive response. Finally the ambulance arrives and once they check me out they decide I need a helicopter to receive me so I can go to a major trauma center.
So then comes the best part.
I had just moved to Texas, didn't really know any phone numbers of anyone who lived in Texas. The best I could have given was the phone number of several frequent business customers but that was no good. As I laid in the hospital bed for hours being treated I pondered how I was going to get out and when I got out, how was I going to get home? I fell asleep because of the good meds and when I woke up my boss was hovering over me, crying.
I start apologizing the moment I see him. I apologized for the truck, for missing the stop, for probably the super pissed customer. I'm in tears as I'm doing this and then I ask if I was fired. He started crying even more and told me to not ask that sort of stupid question.
After we calm down he explained that someone had seen the logo on my shirt and called up every store telling them about this accident. Eventually my boss and the store that was waiting for me realized that their radio calls were not being received by me and drove out to the site of the accident. The cops relayed them to the hospital I was supposed to go to which when they arrived they had to search through every room to find out I wasn't there. They then said if I was a serious case that I would have gone to one of two different major hospitals. One boss went one way and my boss went the other.
The problem was, they didn't have my name written down correctly at the hospital. They didn't have my driver's license and for whatever reason they never asked what my name was so I was filed under some other person's name. I was only allowed to have one visitor at the time and the other boss found me first so my boss had to drive (mind you this is putting him 7 hours of investigating for me) to this trauma center and find me.
In the time period of me being released from there and the time I finally stopped getting my last bill I swear I racked up more money than I'll ever make in my lifetime.
