When my mother died, she left us with debts. Not surprising, since she also played a very big part in the events that led to the spending of everything I inherited from my biological father when I was a child. Nevermind the fact that I was emotionally blackmailed into giving her access to my bank account, but whatever, lesson learned.
The very sudden death of my grandmother two weeks after my mother's didn't really help emotionally, but at least she did not die with debts. Fast forward a few months and my aunt sells her house; usually, this would mean that the money would be split between her (closest surviving relative, daughter) and me (grandchild, father dead). However, out of fear of my mother's spending habits and possible inheritance-related issues, my grandparents made my aunt the sole owner of their house.
While the outcome of this is obvious at this point, let me just say that I really trusted my aunt, so I wasn't surprised that she even made sure to reassure me that the money from the sale would be split anyway.
In a completely unexpected turn of events, when I asked about details today, she told me that she does not intend on splitting the money as its hers and that I probably misunderstood something. I wasn't at a complete lack for words, but I couldn't quite believe it was happening either. Still holding on to that last bit of hope, but considering that she obviously changed her mind in the past few weeks, I'm not holding my breath either.
At the very least she seemed to be worried about me being angry about it; I told her I wasn't, which is true. I'm just disappointed.
