Random Fail: First World Problems

I'm not questioning your choice of text. I'm challenging the idea that the specific text matters as much as the analysis of it. You could learn the same techniques from an equally deep analysis of Twilight. The idea that having read or not read certain books is the basis for someone's level of intelligence is archaic, leads to academic circlejerking and is one of my biggest pet peeves. Greek mythology in particular falls into that category: it only prevalent in culture because it's prevalent in classrooms. If Norse mythology was taught instead, maybe Nike would be called Hretha and Fafnir's shitty helmet wouldn't be called Assjammer because no one can remember how to spell it. Never having heard of Dionysus before doesn't make them uncultured or stupid.

But this IS the world(our culture) that was created. Yes it is self fulfilling, but there is no harm in that. Children aren't starving because a brand calls itself Hermes instead of Shiva. But knowing your culture is a sign of intelligence by understanding yourself and the world around you. Showing cultural knowledge is a display you took your education seriously and actually retained something. You will be hard pressed to convince me culture isn't important. I actually see a pattern between the degrading of people's attitudes towards society being paired with the degrading of the idea of culture, morals, and etiquette. People who wreak themselves on their own immediate surroundings are going to give no fucks to others around them.

It really is ok to allow mythology to be a part of our culture. It's ok to be able to have common knowledge be passed down considering our own country's history is so short

I've gotten a more diverse cultural education just from reading video game lore (Civ V in particular) than I got from school. Similarly, I learned more about actual life skills from FFXI and other MMOs than I did from school.

Just found out that the DelTaco near work closed down last week. That was the cheapest good lunch place close to my office. Cannot beat only spending $3.50 at ANY restaurant and walking out with a full stomach. I'll miss my weekly 3 value taco's, salsa verde nacho's and $1 Tea.

I'll ask one of my supers. He's Korean and knows all the good places in Koreatown. I've gone to a couple of the traditional Korean places with him after meetings since we have a field office just above Garment District/Koreatown.

We're getting way off topic, but have you tried that Maple service yet? They have a couple good chefs that signed on to participate. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, though.
