I've worked one restaurant in Idaho where this was the policy. Actually it was shared known as "tip share" to everyone not a server or manager.
Cooks , bussers , dish , hostess ( which I was) based on hours worked. I wasn't a fan of the policy as it hurt the servers take home and rewarded shitbags in some cases.

I have had servers at other places choose to tip the cooks which I think is fine based on case by case.

Joints I worked at the tipshare was strictly between servers, hosts, and busboys. Cooks got their hourly and that was it. At Lone Star Steakhouse specifically we at least had many regulars that would tip us cooks, but that was still few and far between.

It's not making fun of poor people. If you don't have money, you have to learn to live within your means. Figuring out what things you can afford means including the cost of tips for those services.

I would think that being poor, you might want to enjoy a dinner as a special occasion and on that occasion you might spend say, 150$ on your meal.

I wouldn't say that the person shouldn't be eating somewhere because they didn't tip 30$ to someone who does the same job at the same level of service as an applebees waitress. They would probably tip 5-10$ and that would be more than fine. You sat for an hour, the waitress has 3 tables of poor people, she gets 15$ on top of her salary in that hour. The reality is that she would make more than that, and she'd be making a lot more for the same shit as someone who worked somewhere that didn't overcharge for the food.

That's more than mailcarriers get unless they're actual employees and that's a much harder dumb person job.

My gf is a hairstylist. A lot of people assume the person cutting the hair makes that money. If it's a place where you don't pay a chair rental fee, the chain makes that money. A chair rental place, the stylists charge whatever the fuck they want.

If you're working 40 hours as a waiter and concerned about a 10% tip. You're in the wrong industry or doing it wrong. A lot of students work 20-30 hours a week and get by.

I will admit that I have not-tipped before. Because I'm a forgetful/inexperienced idiot. I forget to tip bartenders the most.

Something I learned last time, though: Bartenders don't like it when you pay for each drink individually with a card. Makes sense and totally obvious in retrospect, but not something I'd thought about.

When I do tip, it's either 20% or 20% rounded up to the nearest dollar. I'm not fast at math, I value my time out and about more than I value money, and it makes me feel nice to leave a nice tip. If I can't afford that much extra, I don't go out anyway cos that's part of the price of the meal.
