I learned the hard way and got AAA Plus because fuck that $550 85-mile tow home the one time my car broke down. Worth the $76 a year.
I don't currently have a job though, so everything that isn't essential has been tossed aside. I definitely will get it when I start working again though. Being an intern is a tough life.
All told, I got the tire changed then went to get it looked at. Of course, it couldn't be patched, so I had to replace it, and also the other front one. I did this two years ago, but what the fuckers at the last place neglected to tell me was that my truck was out of alignment and that's why my tires are wearing so damn quickly. So I also paid for a fucking alignment today, as well. I'm going to have to borrow money from my dad to cover this. Adulting sucks. lol.
Adulting blows. Back in South Carolina I got a 2006 Dodge Stratus that ended up breaking its timing belt at around 66,000 miles and I had owned it for less than a year at that point. To make matters worse the timing belt broke when I started the car trying to go home from a military installation (NPTU Charleston). So after a 12 hour work day having to manage getting that shit towed back to the apartment, having a family friend drive down from charlotte to look at it (I owe them so much for that) only to figure out 'Yep, its boned' so I ended up having to pay $2,000 to get the engine head rebuilt.
I ended up selling it for $1,000 (Had an 'accident' wherein the only damage done to my car was a missing rear view mirror) because I got tired of the headache that car was and trying to fit a child seat in that tiny ass car was a nightmare. Upgraded to a SUV and never looked back on it.
I would've kept it, but the wive absolutely refuses to get a driver license. A decade of knowing her and almost 6 years of being married to her she is still terrified of getting in the driver's seat.
Timing belts breaking are the worst things to happen , that fucking blows. What many don't realize is that even if it hasn't hit its mileage yet , if the car had a timing belt and is 7 years old it should be done anyway . Car maintenance isn't always fun or cheap but saves you tons in the long run.
Thankfully many newer models use a timing chain that shouldn't need replacing or you may as well get a new car.
My patents rule of thumb was if you can afford a car , new , used or a point a to point b car you can afford AAA/ roadside. The reality is cars don't maintain themselves and these things can happen anywhere to anyone and that peace of mind is worth the 70/80 bucks a year.
I'm unfamiliar with internships but are you able to work at all even part time in another field ? Even if it's only 10-12 hours a week it would be something to put aside.
It's almost impossible because of the additional work I have to do such as grading and planning as a teacher. I was friends with someone who graduated last semester who tried to continue working at Publix and do her internship and she nearly failed the internship because her time was divided. I probably could, but I'd feel like the kids weren't getting the best I could give them. But I'm going to be working a regular 9-5 again basically immediately after it finishes, or at least, that's the plan. I've been just living off my student loans for the time being. Not ideal, but it was all I could really do.
I'm lucky to have a friend who was willing to drive out just so I could bum his AAA membership for a day. I'll have to pay him back with dinner or something eventually.
Also, I'm just pissed that my tire tool was nowhere to be found. It must have gotten lost in the shuffle when I traveled over winter break. Otherwise I'd have just changed the fucking thing myself and gone about my life.
I have AAA and I haven't owned a car in 10 years. They get you sick discounts on everything. Also, if you rent cars frequently (Which I do), you don't have to worry about coverage.
I don't know if they advertise it much but I get free coverage on rentals via Hertz. The walk-away kind of insurance. I have the Premier membership.
I know my dad pays for a higher tier service, but I really know nothing about it. I'm going to look into that. I usually take the insurance when renting because reasons, but if I'm getting it through AAA it doesn't make sense to spend the extra money.
Wait, you get insurance through AAA? Sake, we always paid for it at the rental place. Didn't realize you got a discount too.
I've always made the reservation with my AAA info and bring it up when I go to grab the car. It's either included outright or they include it when I ask about it. I haven't rented a car in 2016 so I can't confirm that it still works. I have a reservation to rent in Cali in a few weeks so I'll see then.
Biggest thing with AAA Plus is the 100 mile tow. The base membership only covers 10 miles then the tow truck guy asks you to confirm if you want to start accruing charges for mileage. Premier is 200 miles.
Also love the money I save on hotel stays with AAA. Don't even need an upgraded membership for it.
Hospital called today, my dad operation that was suppose to be tomorrow, got delayed to April 22nd.
Which sucks because he canceled alot of stuff during the weekend for the operation
