    I went to see Star Trek on an ultrascreen. I sat to close and had to move my head to read the subtitles ; ;

    My driver's license is about to expire. The local DMV is open M-F 8-4:15. Soo, I have a 4 hour window on saturday mornings to drive across town to the other branch and renew ; ;

    California has the dumbest motorcyclist laws.

    It's the only state in the US that allows motorcyclists to drive between lanes. Today, I was on my way to LA on the highway. I was stuck in lane one in mad traffic and the carpool lane opens up. I look, see a bus in the carpool lane and a motorcyclist driving inbetween the carpool and lane one way behind where the bus is. Plenty of room for me to get in. Pull in front of the bus, go about twenty seconds, look behind me and there's the motorcyclist swerving right into my bumper. Guess he didn't realize HOW SLOW EVERYONE WAS GOING BECAUSE UNLIKE HIM WE CAN'T BYPASS THE CAR IN FRONT OF US.

    Luckily, no one was hurt, he had some minor scratches. Baby is ok, and there's only a scuff mark on my car. So ultimately, it's all ok, but it is just so fucking infuriating that it could have been much worse if there wasn't as much traffic and we had been going a lot faster.

    I guess they instituted some restrictions in February about how fast they are allowed to go over what the regular traffic is, but I have yet to see a motorcyclist who got the memo.

    They won't need a memo when they get 86'd, #DARWINBABY

    A few years back my mother-in-law hit a cyclist when crossing a lane when the dude was zipping inbetween lanes. It was her fault, but it just boggles my mind. Their protection against an accident is so fucking minor, who's fault it is is completely irrelevant when you get seriously injured (as in the case of my MIL, guy was in the hospital for weeks). Logic would say to me that cyclists would be slower and more careful because of how dangerous it is.

    You're on a motorcycle, you're doing it cause it's cheaper on gas and you want to look cool.

    you would be surprised how quick this goes out the window to a cyclist when drivers bend over backwards to get out of their way all the time. same reason taxis drive like shit. doesn't help that cyclists always take the moral high ground and use it as an excuse for their shitty/reckless "driving".

    Lane splitting expedites them out of the congestion, reducing their risk of getting hit from behind. Fucking cagers.

    If this is true, why is California the only state that allows it, and just recently added restrictions to it?

    (Also, it's the highest state for motorcycle deaths, but that is skewed since it's the most populated state. I tried finding a statistic that did it by population percentages but couldn't find one.)

    It really is nerve racking to keep an eye out for them speeding by. The fact that cali highways have all these signs to warn drivers to "look twice for motorcyclists" tell me that theory and practice are two different things.

    Lane splitting is legal and more common in other parts of the world, the US have far less motorcycles to really have anyone lobby for changes. Nerve racking to drive safely and defensively? c'mon man. As for the signs I think its for more than the lane sharing. Motorcyclists have to make a conscientious effort to wear more visible clothing and add more lights to their bikes, so blind ass cagers don't run into them or stop suddenly without seeing them in their rear view mirrors.

    If you think that's all there is to it then lol

    I don't see cyclists driving defensively, and they're the ones with the least protection.

    Common problem with cagers not seeing cyclists. Leads to deadly accidents.

    I wonder what could help that...maybe having them adhere to the same traffic laws?

    Not only this, but in areas where lane splitting is not allowed, motorcyclists suffer a disproportionate amount of vehicle damage and personal injuries. Drivers have tunnel vision, and only see the car in front of them, often leading to motorcyclists being sandwiched between two vehicles.

    It is. A more relevant statistic is that rear-end collisions happen far less often in California than anywhere else in the United States. This is directly due to eliminating the aforementioned as an issue.

    The only reason the United States has even a remotely reasonable traffic system is because of our copying Germany during WWII. Unfortunately, we did not copy everything, and created our own problems, such as the elimination of lane sharing, and unnecessarily restrictive speed limits.

    guy wouldn't have rear-ended me if he wasn't lane sharing, so ya clearly that's the case.

    If he were lane splitting he shouldn't have hit you. Were you crowding the line? Or changing lanes without yielding to oncoming traffic?

    I did. The accident was caused by his excessive speed and his lack of paying attention, not his lane splitting. But you wanted to blame it on that.

    No, I read it. It still doesn't explain if you were crowding the line. Also, suggests highly that you failed to yield the right of way.
