I find it hard to thank people for their service who are younger than 80, because we haven't had a military action that truly seemed justifiable and necessary for about that long. These days, there's little distinguishing people in the military from mercenaries. They're signing up to go fight whoever they're told to, and the main reason is because of the economic (and educational) benefits they get in return. I'll probably feel differently if China ever invades.

I admit this part actually can be true. I myself suffer from caring too much and putting time and every into things I shouldn't. While my husband is the "lets everything roll off" type and has been trying to beat that lesson into me for the last 7 years. I'm getting better but it's a process I wish I began years ago.

Bitch 6 years in and I didn't fight no one and in fact I can only think of 1-2 people I served with that had real combat and that was only because they volunteered to go play in the sandbox. Vast majority of the military is just keeping things going and practice for if something happens and projection of power

Had to be jumpstarted again today. Took it to Autozone and they said the battery is bad and my alternator is weak. He recommended taking it to a mechanic rather than replacing the battery.

Googled what he told me when I got home and it says an alternator idling at 12.5v is low but fine and it would jump when revved up, which we didn't do. So now I have no fucking clue what to do. Tempted to take it to a different Autozone to see what they say.

The battery dying is so weird too. Fine at 7am. Fine at Noon. Fine at 3pm. Just clicks at 5pm. Same thing both times it died. Like I'd have thought it would drain overnight not suddenly in 2 hours when it didn't do that at all earlier in the day.

If the alternator isn't recharging it properly while you're driving then you're consuming energy from the battery while you're driving thus why it dead after you already used it a few times.

I believe all a battery has to do is start your car, then your alternator charges your battery while also providing enough energy for everything in your car, so while running your battery should only be charging, but in the case of a faulty alternator your car will be consuming energy from the battery while your car is running to make up for what the alternator isn't pushing out.

This. Mine died on the drive from FL > CA. Killed the battery.

Get the alternator replaced. Probs $500 with a new battery. Maybe less depending on the type of car. Also sorry.

You should be seeing a lot closer to 14.4V with the engine running. 12.5V resting voltage on a battery means it's in bad shape, if it's higher than 12.5V with the car off that means your alternator and battery need to be replaced. If you just change one, the component you don't replace will end up damaging the new one you did replace. New battery but not a new alternator, battery won't get charged and will die like you have experienced. New alternator but not a new battery, the alternator is going to be working at near 100% duty cycle trying to charge your dead battery.

That's my personal recommendation, but if you have a trusted mechanic you should definitely have them check it out and give you their opinion.

It's very bad timing as I'm closing on a house at the moment but I can't feel too awful about it. I only paid $1400 for the car 2 years ago figuring it would tide me by for 6-12 months. The only things I've had to replace since having it is the brakes and the starter, so I'm easily ahead right now. Guessing this will set me back like $300-500?

If Autozone would not install a battery, it's your alternator. The reason why the battery keeps dying is because when it got a jump all that did was charge it up to the level it was at right before you had an issue. The battery "should" be good once the alternator is taken care of. If you're getting a mechanic to handle the alternator ask them to put the battery on a trickle charger overnight. Then test the battery.

Autozone techs have some training, but they are not mechanics. Most of them undergo an 8 hour training class reminiscent to what our basic battery training classes are for AAA. Which basically means they know how to use a tester enough to manipulate it to get the results they want to show you. I would just take the car to a local mechanic and have it looked at.
