lol wtf this guy who was in my room at Metrocon took a selfie w/ one of my body pillows puts it as his main pic for tinder and gets a match instantly and first thing she does is ask him about the pillow lol
Fuck weddings. And all the shit associated with them. What a scam. Engagement parties, Bridal showers, etc. That goes doubly for babbies. Gender reveal party, push presents, baby showers. What the fuck. I mean I don't give shit unless it's a wedding (even then it's a couple hundred bucks).
My mom "had to" go to my cousins bridal shower over the weekend. This bitch has over $10k worth of shit on her registry. And most of it was bought. Then the wedding is in October, to which I'm sure they'll get 10's of thousands of dollars as they've got 225 people coming. I get that weddings in reception halls are expensive and you need to "recoup" your money, but you can do some budget shit and have it be perfectly fine.
I mean I'm (theoretically) closing on a co-op in the next few weeks. Sure I could do a housewarming and invite all the people and have a registry. But I'm not. Is it pride? Fuck if I know. If people want to get something for me like a gift card or whatever as a congrats, I'll accept it. But I'm not going to blatantly ask people for shit. I also probably don't want to get married & have kids. So should I have a party for that too?
That shit falls under "crap you aren't getting from me"
My mother insisted on throwing a baby shower for me when I was pregnant with my first son, and I didn't want to have one in the first place. I really don't like being flooded with that much attention (people gushing at me, touching me, etc.) She proceeded to throw the party anyway, invite all of her friends and none of mine, and I was uncomfortable the entire time. Thank god gender reveal parties didn't exist back then, because I'm sure we would have had one of those, too, even though I think the entire notion of gender reveal is asinine for reasons I really don't want to get into right now.
I mean the idea behind the shower is nice, get stuff that you otherwise couldn't afford to get yourself, because babies are expensive. (And yes, I know the argument about not having kids you can't afford, shit happens though.) But in practice, all we got was clothes, mountains of baby clothes, so many that the kid never wore because he outgrew them so fast and we had so many. And we still ended up shelling out for the big ticket items ourselves anyway.
Also, what the fuck is a push present? Is that what it sounds like? A reward for doing what you're fucking supposed to do? Get the fuck out of here.
It's more of a Mother's Day Zero, I think.
the entire concept is actually not bad. it's supposed to be to give a new household (and later, family) the shit they need. sort of a takes-a-village approach. but then, it's gone waaaaaay overboard as 'murica tends to do with gift giving.
you're not obligated to do shit. seriously, i don't give gifts. i just plain can't afford to. no one gives me shit for it. Granted, they know my situation, but generally speaking, the type of people who are good company might be hopeful in regards to gifts, but are far more concerned by your presence or lack thereof.
i'm budgeting pretty hard to give gifts to my grand-niblings, but it's 100% on my end. I'm doing it because I really, really, want to, and even then I'm limiting myself to shit that I'm hoping will be immensely sentimental for them and/or provide MANY hours of playtime. For christmas I got them a play tunnel, because I remember loving those things when I was little. We used them for pillow forts and shit. I'm hoping they'll do the same. And I'm saving my money starting now, so that if I find a nice puppet store I can get them each a really nice full-body animal puppet, because when I was little my mom got me one, then another after the first proved to be a wild success. My dad used them to wake me up in-character every morning, from when I was three to eleven. That was a crazy special, sentimental thing for me, and I'm hoping they can have the same thing with their dads.
anyway, for all that shit, set some specific rules for yourself that adhere to the original idea of helping them build their new household/family: only useful shit for newlyweds, like money or appliances they don't already have, and only gifts at the babyshower/etc for the first child (or maybe first of that gender). That way if they DO call you on it you can make it clear it's not personal, it's just something you ALWAYS do.
My fail might be lacking the attention span to read some of ya'lls long-assed posts.
I still love yous gaiz though.
Fuck wedding registries. I do the Asian thing and give money and call it a day. If I like you, maybe $200-300. If I don't, $100. I think I only broke the bank by a bit on one of my good friend's weddings because 1) he's a bro and his wife is awesome and 2) I was in the wedding party.
Though my other friend's wedding I gave $200 and the groom told me I gave more money than some family members. What fucking cheapskates those fams are. Funny thing is they got divorced 2 years later.
Not a fan of weddings myself.
I don't even stay long enough for the food. I show up watch them say I do, congratulate them, and gtfo
Not that I'm leaving, but I usually say something along the lines of "I'm on a diet, so don't head count me for food/drinks because I won't be having any"
Which is usually the case even the times I have stayed, lol
What the fuck is a push party? And now there are gender reveal parties? what the god damn fucking fuck is this shit?
It's a gift for pushing out a baby.
