Got the renewal notice for my lease. Past years the increase has been $10, $20, nothing too major. This year they're raising me $100. I don't even want to consider the possibility of moving, but ... shit. That's a lot of money to raise my rent. Fuck.

Reply by providing craigslist links to comparable nearby places with lower rent than your increased rent price and arguing that the rent increase is unjustified. I used that tactic this year to negotiate away any rent increase at all (there were units in my building with the same floor plan coming up for rent at a lower price, so it was pretty easy.)

However, if you can't do either of those things then the rent increase is probably justified.

If they try to stiff you for it, move. You should probably be looking to live on the cheap for the next few years while you build your work history as a teacher and gather money for a house downpayment and/or retirement.

I don't technically need a down payment to purchase a house, as I can get VA loans which don't require them.

The problem with moving is that I have no one to help me do it, and I am not terribly interested in paying movers. I'll look into comparable places though, that's a good idea. I know that this place is now at capacity and apparently there's a waiting list, but I'm sure they're not losing money on me.

That's nothing honestly. Most people across the board are looking at 150-200 increases every year. Still sucks and I feel you on it but it could be worse.

Possibly. I have some time to make up my mind. I have to give them 60 days notice and my lease expires on December 31st, so I have until the end of October to figure it out.

Only hundred bucks? from 2012 to our last renewal in April we went from 1280 a month to 1980 a month.

Yeah, every year at my old place they would try raise it by $150-250+ but this is in lolflorida

Started at $825 (for a 1/1 900 sqft apartment)
Year 1 - Raised to $995. Bartered down to $940.
Year 2 - Raised to $1100. Took 2/2.5 1400sqft Townhouse with garage in same complex for $1260 (Supposed to be $1400+)
Year 3 - Raised to $1540. Bartered down to $1440.
Stayed for 6 months before saying fuck this shit, bought my own house and paid the lease break fee

Main deterrant from moving for me was that the increases were generally just low enough where movers + deposit + pet fees would cost the same as just fucking staying so I opted against the inconvenience of moving. I really should have told them to fuck off at Year 2 in hindsight

Are we talking about rent increases now? Because I think SoCal and Portland are the only places where rent prices are not a first world problem. They are straight up creating third world conditions in the middle of the city.

North Portland, Alameda district. From 2012 to present, rent prices on one rental went from $1150 for 2 bedroom townhome to $2450 for that same place. It's a fucking dump and belongs in the projects.

The fucking bitch that did our physicals for life insurance lied and put a slightly higher blood pressure for me on our lab reports. I was 112/66, she put 122/70 and I know for a fact 120 systolic is a break point for most health incentives. I wanna make a stink about it, but watch her come back to retake it after I bitch and actually get 120+ cause now I'm stressed and annoyed.

It really doesn't matter cause my fake cholesterol is high anyway which is more significant in the results anyway lol. GG super low carb cut. Insulin was like 60 but it spiked my cholesterol, can't win em all.

Still annoyed about bp though.

To be fair, there are many areas that have rent control for that type of shit. He must just not live in one of those areas.

I live in a complex so it's not just one person but an entity, so I know. I just have to weigh it. There are new complexes going up all over this area and the prices are not low so I wouldn't be surprised if I couldn't find anything comparable.

Really may start to consider a purchase (again, I tried a few years ago) but I feel like it's too soon after starting my career. I had really wanted another year to sort my shit out, so maybe I'll take the increase this time while I start to build up credit and savings. The additional $100 will at least be offset by my new income. I just didn't really want to have quite that much of an increase.

Nigga I live in a college town and I got people willing to pay 850$ each just to split a room to sleep in. I'm tempted to turn my living room into a series of cubicles and rent to foreign exchange students that don't know any better.

With the exception of a couple of places, the bay area doesn't have rent control. I mean, it could be worse, people were having their rent increased from like 1500 to 8000 in San Franciscio.
