^ this. All it means is the kid gets to sit down with an AP for a few minutes and get told what they did was wrong and not to do it again. Maybe they lose 20 minutes of their lunch one day sitting in an auditorium. It's an action a teacher needs to take to show that something was done about a problem but by no means is it anything serious. I thought all adults knew the permanent record was a lie.

Lmao at "calling the cops." Writing someone a referral is basically one step above a detention.

I will have a talk with the kid, and make a general PSA to all of my students about it. Maybe I was unclear at some point. (Plus being a teacher means repeating yourself. Often. To the point of it being ridiculous.) Regardless of how I discipline the student, (chat with him, call home, detention, referral) it still ends up being more work for me. And I'm going to ask him to redo the assignment, which will give him a chance to recoup the grade, which I honestly don't have to do at all.

Personally, I would take the kids aside and warn them this won't fly in the future. When I was a kid I was a goody-two-shoes and even I wouldn't have thought copying the dictionary was plagiarism. I mean, it's definitely also possible the kid was seeing what your limits are, but that's when you let them know this goes beyond it. Then write them up if they do it again.
Holy fucking shit do you people not know what the fucking word "essentially" means?!?!?

It does not mean that she is actually calling 911 on the fucking kids for plagarising.

As someone who seems to teach english writing , id expect you to have intellect above that of a troglodyte to know what "essentially" means.

Kas just said its a step above detention and goes straight to the principal, which means its pretty fucking severe. When i was in HS, people laughed at detentions, but if you had to see the principal, shit was serious.

Do you work at her school? If the answer is no then you have no idea how severe it is or isn't shit carries different severities at different places. Maybe the principle is really hands on with discipline and kids get sent to the principle all the time...

Well considering Aks has seemingly backed off writing the kid(s) up and opted to talk to them face to face after what everyone has said, im gonna safely assume getting written up for plagarism is a big deal at her school.

And its a big deal at most schools.

Im almost certain post high school level institutions have a zero tolerance for plagarism, or at best a one strike rule.

Dude, calm down. The teachers in the thread are all trying to tell you that writing a kid up don't mean shit. Seeing an AP don't mean shit. Plagiarism is illegal and means expulsion in post-sec education because you're dealing with adults with brains that are expected to be moderately functional. Kids don't have brains yet. They aren't responsible for jack. You ain't getting expelled from an American public school unless you get some assault with a deadly weapon charges up on your ass.

edit: that said, teachers are required to write kids up for this shit. It's important to have a record of action taken. It's a liability thing. You can't have some kid getting caught for something later and claiming it was nbd with Ms. Aks.

I remember my high school had Saturday detentions for the serious offenders. It was 2-3 hours of cleaning the campus after a home football game or some equivalent community service.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Write ups didn't exist in my school systems. You got sent to the principle or detention for the lowest tiers of punishment then on to suspension and such. My middle school got smart though and renovated an unused classroom and started doing in school detentions. Didn't matter though my middle school principle liked me and then he became the principle at my highschool. Send me all you want teach

Seriously write up for copying dictionary for some homework is kind of lol. This aint like doing a paper or something it's like copying the math answers out of the back

    So cute.

My high school's vice principal (VP dealt with high school students, P dealt with elementary students) was disliked so much he got booed at our graduation ceremony because he was such a piece of shit. Our principal was cool as fuck though.

Making a big deal out of plagiarism like that matters irl. The likelihood that that student will be interested in a job where they need to be worried about plagiarism is likely <0. It's like those math teachers that told us we wouldn't always be able to use a calculator and to memorize formulas. I carry a calculator and google in my back pocket.

There was a time when I thought teachers were underpaid, then I read their posts on BG.

Paying them more doesn't seem to change shit anyway, teacher average in U.S is 41K and South Korea(48K), Japan(45K) and we are not even close. Nevermind Finland,
The average salary for primary education teachers with 15 years experience in Finland is about $37,500, compared to $45,225 in the United States.

Shit when I was at school using the dictionary wouldn't be plagiarism, it would probably be applauded for actually looking it up yourself rather than just copying a friend.

I'm the corporate trainer for our installers and when I do tests I operate under 'Open book, open classroom, closed mouths' for tests. I don't care if they use their notes, use tablets or physically go mess with the product themselves to find the answers because that's what would be available in the field. Really closed mouths is even a stretch because if they needed help in the field I want them to call the right people rather than struggle but I can't have them openly discussing answers with other trainees.

Basically agree with others in that school rules don't always translate well to the real world, even though I understand why schools operate that way

Report the kid, it'll help long term.

Lazy fucking idiots will keep doing it through college and end up as useless employees.

I got a kid expelled from NYU for cheating. He was a piece of shit. No ragrets.

Using the dictionary is one thing. Copying the example sentences from the dictionary when the assignment was for them to write their own original sentences that displayed an understanding of what the words mean is entirely another. If I had said, "go define the words" then no shit, they're gonna go online and copy a definition from an online dictionary. That wasn't the assignment. I gave them the definitions and we talked about the words. Using them in a sentence helps them achieve mastery.

And trust me, plenty of my kids copy off their friends too, and they get in trouble for that as well.

shove a batchfile with a delay (Timeout X) into the start up, I do for one of our branches with crappy connection (won't help with the VPN part, but)

Yeah. Seems like they were WAYYYY overloaded. I couldn't game or do anything. Ended up reading. Worked when I tested it this morning though.
