So to be worthy of any donor organ, you should have the expectation of living an additional 15+ years? lol

Why aren't more people organ donors? I think that's the number 1 problem.

There is absolutely nothing controversial about this if the guy actually takes care of his health. He might just be unlucky and/or physically predisposed to heart damage.
    Otherwise, waste of a heart.

Religion and stupid crap like that, probably.

(I've always heard that giving consent for organ donation is more complicated than just checking that box when getting your driver's license, so a lot of people who think they're donors actually aren't. But honestly I have no idea.)

In most states at least, you do not control what happens to your body when you die, at least barring a bunch of legal paperwork beforehand. If you sign your license to donate, the hospital will keep your body going on life support so your organs stay alive, but if your dumbass mom rolls in to ID you and says no to donation, you aren't getting donated.

Most important thing is to let those close to you know what you would want to happen. My otherwise healthy cousin died of a congenital heart attack at 35, her parts got donated to I think 6 different people (both kidneys, liver, corneas, maybe a lung? Not sure what else) which is pretty fucking awesome.

This is a troll article, Cheney is more machine than man and hasn't had a heart in 20 years.

No, you should show that you deserve the chance to live longer if you've done nothing but fuck your own body up without care of who else may benefit from the transplant.

Let's go back to what I said before. Who deserves an organ more? The person with a self-inflicted chronic illness or the person who was born with an illness and could be potentially saved?

This is all hypothetical of course - this is given that both are matches for the organ in question.

I understand how the waiting list works, and as I stated - if Cheney waited his time (seriously, 35 years for a transplant to a congressman/VP/politician after several heart attacks?) and was assessed as a low-risk donor over all others in line near him then I don't see the big deal. Again, if he was given priority because of his status then it is a huge deal that needs to have a reset precedent.

I also didn't think of it from an insurance standpoint. Clearly with government insurance none of this is an issue, which again places the problem on the shoulders of the medical industry and insurance practice and not on Cheney himself - so I apologize for that.

He didn't wait 35 years. He waited 20 months. He had his FIRST of FIVE TOTAL heart attacks at 35. I would say five heart attacks and him being overweight still shows he doesn't do much to care for his own health. He definitely has enough money to do so.

Also according to NYS, 10,000 people are on their state wide organ waiting list.

    It is by state.

How many of those 10,000 needed a heart, and how many of those were a match for the organ and able to get themselves to it in an extremely timely fashion?

I like how you keep pointing out in ALL CAPS how shitty his old heart was. It's almost like he needed a new heart.

Also, Cheney has lost a lot of weight recently. I wonder how many people of those 10,000 have a higher BMI than him.

Yes, because we all know BMI means anything and weight loss is ALWAYS healthy right? Who else lost a lot of weight before they died? Patrick Swayze. Steve Jobs. George Harrison. Bill Hicks.

Also Sera, I think you've misunderstood my posts as arguing for him when I'm merely pointing out the fallacies.

Nah i just noticed that you said he waited 35 years... but that wasn't the correct info so I pointed that out is all.

His old heart was shitty because he's SEVENTY FUCKING ONE and took terrible care of it! Five heart attacks don't come from NOWHERE, dude. You don't have 5 heart attacks by living a healthy life. Most people don't live past having TWO.

His "shocking weight loss" comes from being extremely unhealthy and having a heart that cannot pump blood properly or sufficiently for his body, plus OLD PEOPLE LOSE WEIGHT. DERP.
The guy is fucking ancient. Just let him die.

That heart could've gone to a 20 something year old person with a heart DEFECT that wasn't a result of their irresponsible health choices.

You also don't have your first heart attack at the age of 35 unless there's something inherently wrong or you're extremely obese. Does Dick Cheney look obese to you?

You state this as if it's fact. Either show some sort of evidence to back up your claims or admit you simply want him to die because you disagree with his politics.

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Economy...1#.T3VBX2LOzfY - Article about "multiple listing." It is a thing (IMO an unethical thing) and rich people do it. Even rich people I like.

If you can show me ONE person on that list who wasn't more worthy (younger, healthier, needed it because of a defect or a disease that was not inflicted by poor health choices or risky behavior) of that heart, I'll back down. The odds are ridiculously against that though. I don't actually care about the political aspect of this (though the guy is admittedly a dbag.) I was against Jobs getting a new liver too, because he was already too sick at that point for it to matter. People with neuroendocrine tumors (like Jobs) do not get transplants (normally) because their prognosis isn't usually that grand, and because immunosuppressant meds that are required after transplants have been shown to cause the cancer to grow more rapidly (don't know why, before you ask) so they just die anyway, and soon. It is considered HIGHLY rare and HIGHLY experimental -- and IMO there are too many people who need organs for some guy with stage IV cancer to get one so he can last an extra 2 years.

And I *liked* steve jobs. This has NOTHING to do with like or dislike. The guy was old, he didn't take care of himself or his heart, and we gave him a fresh new one to ruin until he dies a shriveled old prune in 5 years. Cool.
