If you’ve had a chance to see the film Cabin the Woods then you may have noticed that a few of the monsters in it appear to be very similar to Left 4 Dead 2‘s infected, well there’s a reason for this.

It turns out that the original plan was to have a crossover between Left 4 Dead 2 and Cabin in the Woods, with the film featuring the game’s infected and the game getting a new expansion based on the film, sadly it never came to be. Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard revealed the information during a Reddit ‘ask me anything’ segment, when he was asked by a fan about the infected similarities.

“We actually were going to do a downloadable L4D2 expansion pack, where you’d fight in the Cabin world, but then MGM went bankrupt so the delay squashed it. But the people at Valve were still cool enough to let us use some of their monsters to fill the cubes in the background (I had a lot of cubes to fill).”

According to Goddard players would have been able to explore both the Cabin and the “facility” world that was located underneath it.

Does God have it in for Whedonites at the moment or something? Because after all the hoo-ha about the UK DVD/Blu-ray of Disney’s Avengers Assemble, there’s now a problem with an authoring fault on Lionsgate’s UK Blu-ray of The Cabin In The Woods (released today).

The Blu-ray does play, but people are reporting that, rather annoyingly, it briefly freezes at eleven different points in the film. (Remember when DVDs paused for a “layer change” back in Ye Olden Times? It’s a bit like that, apparently.)

If your disc is one of those affected, you can email [email protected] to ask for a replacement. If you bought it from a high street shop, be sure to keep hold of your proof of purchase, as you’ll be asked to scan that and send it in (if you ordered online you’ll be asked to supply a copy of the order confirmation email).

Retailers like Amazon have acted quickly to withdraw the Blu-ray from sale because of this technical issue.

If you’ve ordered the DVD, rest easy: there are no issues with that.

UPDATE: Lionsgate say replacement discs are now in production and are asking customers to return their Blu-ray to the retailer where it was purchased (along with their receipt).

Finally got around to seeing this. Pretty damn good movie. I really liked the ending sequences with all the monsters. Wish we got to see more.

The ending twist did remind me a bit of Midnight Meat Train though.

This 'Cabin in the Woods' Maze Sounds Incredible

If you're a big, dorky fan of a particular movie, there's nothing better than experiencing that movie again through some kind of interactive experience. And if you're a big, dorky fan of the recent horror movie The Cabin in the Woods, then you best be gettin' a plane ticket to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida because they're planning something that sounds incredibly cool. For this year's Halloween Horror Nights, the park has partnered with Cabin in the Woods cowriter and director Drew Goddard on a freaky maze that will not only re-create the movie, but also introduce another story that will run parallel to the one featured in the film.

"We are building the cabin completely," said Universal Orlando team member Michael Aiello to Zap2it. "You're going to walk through a forest to get there. You're going into the cabin. You're going to go into the cube cells. We're literally taking everything we can in the film and giving you a kind of best-of montage of the film with this kind of linking story. You're going to be in the control room when merman attacks."

The concept they pitched to Goddard revolves around a newly hired employee of the Facility (played by you), with videos explaining the mythology of Cabin in the Woods as you inch your way through the maze, experiencing some of those clever sacrifices to the gods. Of course the one thing you have to include in any Cabin in the Woods attraction are the numerous inventive creatures featured in the film. According to Aiello many of them will be inside the maze and played by actors versus animatronics, which means there will be plenty of people around you screaming "Ahhh, get them off of me!"

"In the maze, we've got many that were in the forefront of a lot of the scenes -- the ballerina, the Sugarplum Fairy, the Hell Lord -- but also too there are a couple rooms where we're kind of featuring some of the creatures that were just on the screens in the control room of movie," he said. "And then in the finale we've got a couple characters that could open up from Halloweens past, our own events, because we were granted amazing permission to be able to include some of our lineage into Cabin's lineage."

According to the site, the Cabin maze will only be in Universal Orlando and not Universal Hollywood, and will run on select nights between September 20 and November 2. You can pick up your tickets here.
