Seriously, has the whole damned world lost its mind?
Seriously, has the whole damned world lost its mind?
I blame hipsters. Don't know why, I just know they are at fault some how.
Silly youse; it's Tanaka's fault.
Cops shoot a homeowner they thought was reaching for a weapon.
^this happens every week at least
Reminds me of a story from a few years ago here in Oregon where a guy that was already mentally unstable was wandering drunkenly through his small town. When he was stopped by police, he didn't respond and just stood there staring blankly. Of course the cop drew his weapon and demanded for the guy to pull his hands out of his pockets, lay down, yada yada, normal procedure. When the kid pulled his hands out of his pockets as instructed, he was shot and killed. Officer thought he saw a gun...turns out it was an inhaler.
Not a homeowner story, but still thought the kid had a weapon when he didn't. So if a trained cop can make that mistake so easily, what makes any lawmaker believe that an untrained redneck with a propensity for violence can make sound decisions as to whether or not he should shoot at a police officer? That shouldn't even be in the spectrum of acceptable responses to law enforcement.
They are starting to train police on how to identify and handle mentally disabled citizens. I know they are doing this in my hometown.
I think the point, and no offense to jm, but most cops are no different than your civilian example.
And out comes the fundamental irony of using lethal weapons for self-defense.
Just melt down all guns everywhere and train all cops and law enforcement officers in multiple forms of martial arts so they can perform both lethal and non-lethal takedowns at will. Meth heads and druggies on shit that isn't PCP won't stand a chance against kung fu cops, whereas before they could just pick up a gun and kill a mother/father of 4.
Then any serious bad guys will need to learn better kung fu than the cops and real life could be like a jet li movie and holy shit this would be awesome why are we not on this right now?
So in your professional opinion jm, given what litle we know about the shooting of the ex-marine in white plains, do you feel deadly force was warranted? How would you as a police officer handled the situation differently if you were the first officer in the house, the one with a clear a shot on the old man? I understand its difficult to say without having been there first hand, I was just curious how you're trained to deal with the situation. Surely you're not trained to shout racial slurs at mentally unstable people, so we can just ignore the ignorance the white plains officers espoused prior to entering the home. I'd just like to hear how a police officer with respect for the job would handle the same, or a similar situation.
People have said in the other thread if both prongs of the tasers don't connect they don't work. There are other non lethal options you can use though right? Surely with the number of officers there in the room, more than one person was carrying a taser? Pepper spray? Bean bag shotgun? I mean, I don't see how the dude didn't go down after bean bag rounds, they're pretty devastating right? Never been the target of them myself.
As far as this law is concerned, seems like it only ensures that someone is bound to die in nearly every police confrontation with an armed citizen in their home.
U Its still hard to say. Of course the racial slurs would be no good. Most officers are trained in a de-escalation tactic called verbal judo. It works pretty well on alot of individuals, even if they might be mentally handicapped or impaired in some way.
I can't really say how I would have handled that situation, as it sounds like the officers had a hostile encounter in the past with this male. Yet, there is a huge chunk of information still missing from the story.
