REPORT: CANADIENS INTERVIEW MCGUIRE FOR VACANT GM JOB

Francois Gagnon of La Presse reports that NBC commentator and former NHL on TSN analyst Pierre McGuire had an interview with the Montreal Canadiens for their vacant general manager post.

While it wasn't known if the talks were done in person or over the phone or whether McGuire met with Canadiens owner/president Geoff Molson or advisor Serge Savard, sources told the paper that a meeting did take place over the last few days.

McGuire won two Stanley Cups as a scout and assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Penguins and was also head coach of the Hartford Whalers. He also worked as a pro scout and assistant coach for the Ottawa Senators before going into radio broadcasting in 1997.

McGuire joined TSN in 1999 and was an analyst/colour commentator for 12 seasons.

The Canadiens began their GM search after the firing of general manager Pierre Gauthier on Mar. 29, with Molson and Savard leading the hiring process.

Others rumoured to be in the running for the job include Tampa Bay Lightning assistant GM Julien BriseBois, Chicago Blackhawks assistant GM Marc Bergevin, Maple Leafs assistant GM Claude Loiselle and Minnesota Wild director of player personnel Blair Mackasey.

Savard also told reporters last week that he had talks with Quebec Remparts coach/GM and former Canadien Patrick Roy about his intentions for the future.

Hitch should win in a walk, but Dineen not being second is some straight up doodoo. Torts had a great year, but he also started with a playoff team that spent almost to the cap, his season would have been a total failure had they not made the playoffs. Dineen took a team predicted to be in the basement made of other teams' discarded third liners and got a division championship. Maclean third is fine, he was in nearly the same boat as Dineen.

Trotz is difficult, honestly he should have been expected to get the results he did based in their roster, but the man deserves something for the last decade he's put together.

I hardly expected Dineen to win the Jack Adams, but to at least be nominated after taking a basement team in year ONE of a rebuild, no less, to a division win would have been nice, even if that division was regarded as the year's weakest. Some of that success was Dineen's responsibility - he should at least be mentioned.
