Who cares what he said? Seriously, does it matter at all? His words are not dangerous, they should not change the "do I need to use lethal force" calculus one iota.

Focusing on his "disrespect" is simply a defense mechanism so you can dehumanize the victim and make yourselves feel just fine about his death.

He was shot because of the perceived threat when he reached/gestured toward his waist in a situation where the cops were told one of the suspects was flashing a firearm.

The officer did not open fire when he ignored the police and walked away, or when he turned to face them to tell em off and continued walking away, he opened fire when he suspected the man was reaching for a gun and if I recall the video, only fired two shots (or at least, only two hit him?). The actions he performed up unto the gesture that lead to his death are only mentioned because they are contributing factors to the situation that caused it to escalate to a point it would not have gone too had he complied. They may not be the biggest or most important factor to his death but they did contribute to escalating the situation.

I know its tough to imagine but when a suspect might have a gun, a moments hesitation could lead to the headline reading "Cop dead after gas station shootout" or worse, Its not like he shot the guy 8 times while he was surrendering, and its not like he just left him for dead after the incident. Its hard to adequately explain what I mean when I've repeated myself many times and it feels like I go in circles.

Why are you still trying? They've resorted to strawmen, saying we think he deserved to die because he mouthed off to a cop, ignoring the dozens of posts saying why he was actually killed. Just let it go, they will forever be cop haters who can't be reasoned with.

Oh, I think we are already clear on the fact that he was killed because the cop erroneously thought he was a threat - that he had a gun despite not seeing a gun or anything he mistook for a gun. The cop chose to kill him before knowing if he was dangerous. So why are we talking about "yes sir and no sir" language?

    Once again
It was a culmination of everything, it was not one specific thing. But you're still hinging on the idea that he got shot because he told the cop to fuck off.

The same question always pops up, "so you're saying the cop should have killed such and such?"

and the answer is always "i'm not saying i woulda done it ... but i understand"

    Accountability huh.

What do you feel would be the proper accountability for this situation.

Do you think the cop made a mistake or that he did the right thing?

Hell, the cop who killed my friend last month with a stray bullet isn't being held accountable either. It's frustration that there isn't a system in place that goes beyond "good shoot, moving on" - as if every "shoot" is unavoidable. This shoot was avoidable. My friend getting shot was avoidable. I don't have the answers, but at least I recognize there is a problem.

You're frustrated that no one is being blamed for this when that couldn't be further from the truth. That doesn't mean there are not situations where the events leading up to the confrontation just make this kind of thing happen, as unfortunate as it is.

The caller mistook who knows what as a gun. Should they be responsible?

The cops went in guns ready even though they hadn't seen the gun yet. Should they be responsible?

Dillon didn't comply with any requests while he had guns drawn on him, and even made a gesture reminiscent of some one reaching for a concealed weapon. Should he be responsible for his own death?

Just because some one was killed does not automatically mean some one should be blamed and jailed. That isn't justice.

"Fuck you" seems like an appropriate response to anyone bothering you when you're walking around town, not bothering anyone. If you have to suddenly switch to yes sir/no ma'am because it's a cop, and otherwise you're going to be gunned down, there's a problem.

Does he get a negative mark on his police record? Is he denied promotions? Is there anything at all to dissuade a cop from shooting when he legally can - as opposed to when it's the right thing to do?

    This is what troubles me.

I'm actually quite sorry about your friend, but all I wish to know is what kind of system would be deemed appropriate? If there is no answer to that then we should at least acknowledge that this blind frustration/sadness stems from wanting to have something or someone to blame for the tragedy (which is btw, human nature, and why things like the devil exist in peoples head, because we need closure), and I can't possibly blame you or look down on you for wanting that, and maybe if our situations were reversed, I'd be saying the same things you are...

But I honestly can't think of a reasonable accountability for something like a stray bullet... I don't know the specifics of what follows an investigation into police related shootings, but I do know there is one. All I want to know is what would be an adequate starting point as far as more accountability goes for police related shootings. I mean, did the cop who killed your friend offer an apology or at least seem upset a stray bullet he fired killed someone? Was he a total dick/didn't care about it?

    Edit:

All righty, I see. I think there are some internal things but I believe Neph would know this the best. But for what its worth I think it would be very restricting for a police officer to have his career ended and promotions denied because he was forced to kill a suspect, even if it was justified (though if unjustified/Illegal, to jail with him yes please).

IA likely will put a mark on him. If there's a pattern of OIS for a particular officer, there's motives you need to look at under the surface.

Back in the 70's and 80's, IA for Chicago discovered that 1/3 of the officers were psychopathic killers who planted evidence and murdered people. The DoJ ultimately jailed a few who were ultra egregious, and the others, some 500 cops were fired but never charged. It was mostly that 98% of the "victims" murdered by cops were part of the Italian mafia, the Mexican cartel, IRA members, or Black Panther extremists who were convicted killers and true bad guys, but it's one of the most extreme examples of vigilante justice in American culture.

The end result of this is stricter hiring guidelines, mandatory psychological testing once a year, randomized drug and credit history searches and bank account tracking, and even better IA reviews by departments to catch this behavior.

It's no secret that bad police officers exist, but with the way the world works now, it's just not plausible nor is it sustainable to be a corrupt police officer in America now. You'll never see half the force bitching to a Sergeant or Lieutenant about Officer Dickbutt beating the crap out of another suspect, or title IX lawsuits popping up everywhere because of harassment or unfair treatment.
